Good news and ..my mother...

Good news first!

I have gotten an appointment with Hershey Medical Center ( a large teaching hospital in PA) this august!!! Normally they scheduale appointments 3 to 4 months..so I was expecting not to be seen until ) october or novemeber...and Im going august!!!

my mother...

I called my mom to tell her this news..you know...as moms might want to know this about their child...she didnt care. She told me my doctor who thinks I have neuropathy and MS is an idiot and is misdiagnosising me. She thinks Its just stress and depression (lol how many times do i have to hear that?)

I said ..mom? So he's an idiot and is misdiagnosing me because he believes me.
hmm...I didnt argue. I just hung up. Oh well, Its alright. I guess not everyone is going to give me support. I just hope they will be able to diagnosis me and its not going to be too difficult so I can at least give my mom a paper to show her something really is wrong with me.

Hi Inny,

Great news about the expedited appointment.  It's sure nice when it seems that people are paying attention.

As for mom.  Well, I'm not sure what to say other than, I'm sorry she thinks you don't have MS and are just depressed and stressed.  How would she respond to “yes I am stressed and depressed over the fact that I have MS.” It's not unusual for this to happen.  Heck, people get depressed and stressed when their “favorite sports team looses a game.  Why shouldn't I feel the same over the fact I have MS.

I'm not trying to make you feel any worse or detract from your feelings of  frustration/disappointment over the apparent lack of support.  Perhaps her denial is her way of coping over the fact that her daughter has what is potentially a very debilitating disease.

Just my 2 ½ cents.
Thoughts and prayers are w/ you and mom.

This is such a frequent refrain!

I wish I could tell you that handing your mother a piece of paper certifying that you have MS would make a difference. Sad to say this is rarely the case. If we try to 'prove' to others that our symptoms are real, more often than not they will come up with some reason that the doctor is wrong.

Kinder people than I am often make excuses for these family members---they just don't want to accept that their loved one has a serious disease, etc. Sometimes this is right on. Other times it's because that person lacks the ability to recognize that although they personally have no experience of this, it's still quite possible. I have found that people don't change as they grow older, they just get more like themselves, for better or worse.

So whatever the outcome, please don't put all your eggs in that basket. We are here for you, and we do understand.

Mothers....SHEEESH!

I remember my mother saying "that's why we shouldn't get MRI's, they just find things that were always there and tell you you've got something wrong with you"

My father said "you just need to take up jogging or something and you'll be alright".

I understand the pain of not having your mothers support and understanding, and I'm keeping in mind that I'm 54 and my folks are in their late 70's, and this happenned 6 months ago.

I'm sure it would have been much harder on me if I was only 22 like you.

My wife said they were in denial, and I think she was right (they've come around now and are quite supportive, although I don't tell them too much)

I hope your Mom is just in denial. It's very difficult for parents to accept that something is medicaly wrong with their offspring...no matter how old we are. I hope in time she'll become helpful and supportive for you.

Oh, and congrats on your August appt! That is good news!

Thanks for the support...it was really excited to get the appointment and then wham bam thank you mam...my mom.

Frank- thank you. Yes I tried explaining it to her that way..she is pretty set in her ways for being 44. But yes..your right I think she is in denial. I just wish that she could realize I need her for the support, for the help instead of her shutting down because she just doesnt want to face it. We cant win em all.

Ess- yea I have a feeling that is exactly what is going to happen. It seems like she always argues with the person I go to. Im sure after Hershey gives me a diagnosis..if they do at all...then she will say that they are crazy and I need a second opinion. I need to learn to not put all my eggs in a basket when it comes to her. I just love her so much and just wish she was there for me but..goodness is I have my husband.

Mike- Im sorry you had to go through that! It is sad and hurtful..at any age to be unsupported by the people who should be supporting you all along. I am glad they came around.Thank you for your support
