Help with MRI

by Zacksmomi, Feb 06, 2009 11:12AM
I am leaving for a brain MRI in a couple of hours and I am a bit anxious.  I have had MRI's b4 no big deal, but on my cervical spine MRI, I felt like there was very little air.  I think part of it was the pressure on my neck from it being tilted forward a bit, but they had to redo 3 series.
Does n e one have any tips for relaxing b4 the MRI.  I am thinking this one is going to be a bit harder than the last one.
Thanks

sorry you are anxious i was too, i had them cover my eyes which helped i think, i dont know what you can do before hand but for me i am able to meditate and found that the sounds from the machine were actually quite rythmic so i just stated breathing slowly and deeply that's what helped me, i hope it goes ok for you im not sure what else to say, someone told me you could bring music in with you so maybe that would help too,

good luck

Hi,  when I have mine, like every 6 months, I bring a music CD that I would like to listen to while having the MRI done.  It does it for me.

See if it may work for you.

Good luck,

My first MRI I had a mild panic attack.  I was okay until I saw my feet coming into the machine, then I felt trapped.

So for me I do everything I can to not think about it before hand.  Then once there I have them turn up the air, put on the music, and I close my eyes and keep them closed before I go in.  Then I use imagery to keep my mind off being in the tube.  I do not open my eyes.  It also helps me to look in the machine before I get on the bed.  That way I see the both ends are open and I don't feel so trapped.

Also if you like to read take a book with you to read while you wait.  It will keep your mind busy and the anxiety will not have a chance to build.

Sending you peace to still your thoughts

Thank you for the good thoughts.  I was not offered music options last time (before I have been) so i will ask.  I know this machine is totally enclosed except for the feet so I will keep my eyes closed and go to a happy place :)
I am heading out the door.  Will post how it went.

You guys are the best
