How long do you give a new medicine to work?

I started on Celebrex on Sunday. I take it every afternoon at the same time. I have not noticed any difference. I had read that it should only take "a few days" for it to start working. I'm not sure how long I should give it? Admittedly, I was not happy to be starting it in the first place, so my gut reaction is to only give it a week, and stop it if it doesn't seem to be working.

The thing that seems to be working the most is my nighttime dose of gabapentin. That makes me comfortable enough to sleep. By the morning I am right back to being uncomfortable and sore.

I'm thinking of seeing my neuro to see if I can take the gabapentin during the day (right now I take 500 mg before bed only). My regular doctor is the one that prescribed the Celebrex thinking the joint pain was arthritis, though my x-rays and blood work were normal. I'm pretty sure that I'm having muscle issues that will sometimes cause some joint pain, but I do think the problem is starting in my muscles. But, what the heck do I know? LOL

Anyway, I want to be sure I'm giving the celebrex a fair shot to work and not just dropping it the first chance I get. What do you guys think? Should I see my neuro about upping the gabapentin?

Steady state levels should be reached before the 5th day at standard dosage (200mg twice a day.)

Pharmacokinetics
Absorption: Peak plasma levels of celecoxib occur
approximately 3 hrs after an oral dose. Under fasting
conditions, both peak plasma levels (Cmax) and area under the
curve (AUC) are roughly dose-proportional up to 200 mg BID;
at higher doses there are less than proportional increases in
Cmax and AUC [see Food Effects]. Absolute bioavailability
studies have not been conducted. With multiple dosing, steadystate
conditions are reached on or before Day 5.

Hi there,

You happened upon an MS forum. While not all of us are dx'd with MS, some of us have different dx's all together. And, some are seeking information and guidance, and experiences as it relates their current situation.

Like most folks, we have more than one thing going on at any given time. Lovemymonkeys, Jess is a regular forum member here and is seeking other peoples experiences with her post.

Hope this info helps,

Like Alex, I give meds a fair shake too unless experiencing reaction type side affects....I gave baclofen a couple months for side affects to subside relief. They did and it was very much worth the reduction in spasms.

Hope this kicks in for you soon!

I usually give a drug two weeks at least. As long as I am not having a dangerous side effect.
