I think you'll find that a vast number of pwMS have gone through it too, its common enough to see a physc for mental health testings and or cognitive assessments, somewhere in their dx journey. The idea that its psychological and not phsysiological isn't exclusive to MS, just pick any difficult to dx condition. So i think you'll find that psych testing is pretty common in the MS diagnostic journey, especially if their MRI and clinical findings aren't exactly clearl that it is a neurological condition like MS.

I usually recommend people go get tested for 2 reasons, the first is that if there are signs that a mental health condition (health anxiety, conversion disorder etc) is a 'possible' cause then thats not exactly a bad thing, imho. There are really good treatment plans out there and if it is MH you still wouldn't be 'crazy'. :-)

The second is that if there arn't any signs that a mental health condition is a 'possible' cause, then knowing for sure, being realy sure that 'your not crazy', is soooooo self empowering. Just having that peice of paper which clears you of having a mental health condition, is often enough to get MH off the table of possibilities, again not a bad thing, imho.

I've been tested for MH and i've had cognitive testing, its in my records that i dont have any psychological condition, it was what i and everyone who knows me fully expected, so no suprise there. Cognitive testing was eye opening, pre-testing I already knew i'd lost pre-established skills but knowing for sure was a tad confronting for a lot of reasons but its straying  off topic so i wont go on about it. lol

Lol i booked my self in for testing the day after the first neuro (epilepsy specialised in) said he thought my communication and cognitive issues was probably 'senile dementia' and the way i walked was probably psychological. Ummmmm i'd just turned 45, i actually giggled my head off, my elderly mother was speachless, which set me off some more lol

Take it from me, who still walks like a human string puppet, and who is still laughing my way through life lol go get tested for mental health and if you can make sure the neuro specialises in MS because its so much better than if they dont.

Cheers.........JJ

I still think the best way to play this is reverse psychology. :-D

(I don't want MS either!) Good idea to go to a neurologist who specializes in MS - not all neurologists have a background or experience in this area.

hi i had my shrink exam a few weeks ago and its all clear which I knew it would be and I really feel like going back to the neuro and shoving the paperwork in his face with a few choice words but I wont I found a new neuro saw her today and she is great no answers yet but she is getting there. even the shrink put in his report he thinks I have ms so keeping my fingers crossed that this new one will figure things out . so get evaluated and then you will have proof and actually I felt vindicated when I got my results even though I knew it was going to be fine.\

best of luck

It's my GP that thinks that not my neuro she is still beleiving she is on the right track with MS.  I will take your advise and for sure go see the Shrink then it's off the table.  And we can get back to business and back on the right track and find out what is really really going on.

Thanks again :)
At least i know i am not crazy and feeling stuff that is not there

Michelle, it all makes perfect sense to us.  Many people around here have been told it's in their head.  The best cure for that crap is to go have the shrink evaluate you and then bring the report that says you have nothing mentally wrong back to the neurologist as proof.

Unfortunately once they think it might be a mental issue, that is next to impossible to get off your record until you get that evaluation.

I am so sorry to hear you are going through this.  It really $ucks. Come back and vent anytime you want - there are lots of people here who understand it all too well.
