I agree that having a neuro tell you it will be seven years before it's time for an LP and it may be 10 years for a diagnosis is ridiculous, particularly with all the problems you are having Tahiri. Please do not give up. You definitely should not have to be having all these symptoms.
Barb
Thanks. I believe I may have been checked for lyme, but I am not sure. I will have to go back to my first GP. I will also look into a B12 deficiency if the MRI's are clear. Thanks. I was just having an emotional breakdown. And yes you did not misunderstand that is what my neuro says. Thanks again.
Tahiri
Hi, again. I'm sorry you're feeling so confused. If the next MRIs are normal, then you'll have to decide how bearable this pain and weakness in your arms and legs is. I can't remember: has your neuro run tests for other things that cause these symptoms? Has anyone checked you for the MS mimics like Lyme disease and B12 deficiency (just to name 2 common ones?) You have mentioned tests two years ago for Hep C, mono, shingles and such. Those are not MS mimics.
If your GP got the 2-yr-old MRIs (the report or the images?) and called to send you to a neurologist, you need to find out why. Make an appointment and ask. Or get a copy of the MRI report itself. Find out if it is really "clean." Maybe the GP felt that this all seemed neurologic, was not comfortable dealing with it, and referred you to the appropriate specialty.
It certainly sounds like you are having nerve pain, plus some whole body symptoms like the fatigue.
BTW your timeline is great. It paints a better picture now. Ahhh, and you added the resolution of symptoms with pregnancy and the severe return of them 4 months after delivery.
Yes, some people don't get diagnosed for many years. That is true. It can be because the first doctors didn't consider MS or because the person just didn't go back for re-evaluation. Sometimes they just get tired of the whole process and quite fighting. Occasionally, it might (I guess) take that long for the body to show the evidence. I doubt this happens that often, so I do NOT believe this is the norm. Many people come to a diagnosis within a few months (or weeks) of their first symptoms.
As I read what I read, when MS is suspected and there isn't enough evidence, the neuro exam and MRIs are usually repeated every 6 to 12 months.
But, I still say that for a neurologist to tell you from the get-go that you likely have MS, but it takes 7 to 10 years to diagnose AND that he wouldn't recommend an LP "for at least 7 years" (!!!) is the most ridiculous thing I have heard in a long time. Did I misunderstand you on this? Is not this what you were told?
It sounds like this neurologist is giving himself enough time so that you will either be a picture-perfect case with 7 to 10 years lost when you could have had treatment, or that he just doesn't want you hounding him to come to a decision.
Let's hear from others. Does telling a person to wait 7 years for it to be time to do an LP or telling them not to expect a diagnosis for 7 to 10 years seem reasonable?
Tahiri, there are other tests that can give the neuro more information. With all the weakness, pain and tingling in your limbs you could have muscle and nerve studies to see if there is a problem out in the muscles or peripheral nerves and Evoked Potential Studies, like the SomatoSensory EP, to see if there is evidence of demyelination in the central nervous system.
Finally, you are so sick of this whole rollar-coaster. We all get that. When you asked if you should continue pressing for answers even with the symptoms resolving, I would say this. You know by now, that they WILL likely come back, because they have several times. It doesn't matter that much that you be having active symptoms when they do the workup. So, you don't have to wait until the symptoms come back. The lesions are still visible between attacks (if this is MS)
I've written a whole buch of disjointed comments. My brain isn't putting out stuff in logical order today, sorry. I just don't see that you have had anyone give you much creedence, yet. There is so much you should be checked for. At your age you should not be disabled by pain and weakness. There is some reason.
I'm going to post this and continue to think about it. Maybe I can make more sense a little later.
((((Hugs)))) Quix
Here is my third one. Wow these are hard.
October 2005
• Severe back pain all over my back nothing would relieve it. Lasted 1 week.
• Hip pain worst on the left side.
January 2006
• Severe back pain returns.
• Back spasms.
March 2006
• Back pain returns. It is even worse. It would spasm and burn. It hurt so bad I could not even sit or stand up. I had to have assistance from my husband a number of times just so I could get home. This lasted for a little over 2 months almost 3.
• Tingling from the waist down.
• Trembling of hands when doing sensitive work
• Started Flexoril for back spasms.
• Tests were done for Lupus, Mono, Shingles, Hepatitis C, and there may have been more. All were negative.
April 2006
• The back pain is continued from March 2006.
• Tingling in the legs has spread to arms right side then left side.
• I felt a tightness around my torso making it difficult to breath. This came and went for a couple of months.
• I felt disoriented and my brain would feel fuzzy (confused). This lasted a few days.
• Went to ER found out allergic to Flexoril
• Tried Soma found out allergic
• Had an MRI of Brain, C, T, and L spine. First Neuro said it was clean. Reports from radiologist mostly stated clean with one bulging disc. CT scans were also done.
May 2006
• Back Pain still continued from March
• Tiredness. I constantly wanted to sleep and did not have much energy to do things.
• Started Gabapentin given by first neuro. This seemed to relieve a lot of the back pain and tingling.
• Symptoms gone by end of may mid June
July 2006
• Tightness in chest on and off. Made breathing difficult
• Became pregnant.
• Fainted or passed out a few times
• Symptoms left by Mid Aug
March 2007
• Child Born
May 2007
• UTI
July 2007
• Back pain and spasms. Burning sensation in my back.
• Tingling from waist down
• Trembling of hands when doing sensitive work
• UTI
March 2008
• Back pain, spasms and burning sensation returns. Back became tender to the touch,
• Tingling from the waist down.
• Hip pain (left side) acted up.
April 2008
• Symptoms from March continue.
• UTI
• Treated with prednisone. Took for 1 week. Didn’t help
May 2008
• Symptoms from March continue.
• Tingling in legs spread to back and arms.
• Leg pain (worse on right side). Sensitivity to touch in the legs, especially right hamstring. Legs constantly felt stiff and sore like I had run marathon. I thought I would collapse between how weak they felt and the pain. Lasted 1 week.
• Pain in my arms (worse on the right side) Arms felt heavy and tired (worse on the right) Pain in my right elbow. Pain in hands so severe that I could not type or play piano. Still occurring off and on, but originally lasted for a week straight.
• Major fatigue. Much worse that last time. Rest would not reduce it. Relaxing did not help. Wanted so much to fall asleep but could only stay asleep for a couple hours at a time.
• Confusion
• Xrays of my back were done and nothing was found.
• Given Arthrotec and Lyrica. Took for 3 days before my GP took me off of it. Went back onto my Gabapentin.
.
Before 2005 I was very active. I ran Cross Country and Track in high school. My freshman year of college I ran a half marathon with my mother. I was running that fall. I went to school full time and worked part time. I was in really good shape and could function really well on little or no sleep. Now everything has changed.
For the most part. I just do not know all that I was tested for. I could probably find out really easy (My first GP for all of this **** was a cousin). I know he tested for Hepatitis C, Lupus, Mono, and shingles. I know these were all negative, but I am not sure exactly when that appointment was. I know it was spring of 2006. I went to him so often that spring that I do not remember. I know my current GP ruled out Arthritis by an xray of my back and when he got my 2 year old MRI he called and told me to go to a neuro. Why? I am just confused because my first Neuro told me it was clean. But my GP looked at the MRI and said only a neuro could get to the bottom of it. He also said I needed to have a spinal tap and to make sure my neuro ordered one. You can see how that went.
How long does it really take to diagnose MS or know one way or the other? Sorry my one friend with MS it did take 10 years so I believed my current neuro.
In all honesty I am so confused and frustrated and upset with everything that I just want to cry and give up. And I think I would and might if my next MRI is clean. Symptoms seem to be reducing. Sorry to go on like this, but I do not know what to do anymore. i know many of you have been searching for much longer, but I do not have the money to keep going to doctors.
Sorry to get all emotional.
Tahiri
uhhh....yeah....I guess that would be a good idea.
It's not that I don't like "him", but I have no respect for his attempt to get you to believe that 7 to 10 years is a reasonable expectation.
About your earlier question. If you don't have or don't remember results, then that's fine. Leave that part out.
Do the reast of the suggestions make sense?
Quix
I take it you really do not like my current neuro. Just guessing by the fact you keep bringing up his length of diagnosis.
Tahiri
PS I am going to be giving this to my "It takes 10 years to diagnose" neuro so I might just keep that little tidbit out of the timeline.
I wrote my timeline in Word and Copy and Pasted it. I do not have any of my previous doctor reports or testing results. I only have the ones I know from memory. Is this a bad thing?
Tahiri
Okay, I want to know how you guys inserted "bullets" into the text!
Hi, You've made good improvements to the timeline. I'm agoing to have you refine it a little more.
When you actually do it with a word processor I recommend that you put the dates in bold. Also make sure you have the double spacing between the dates and text. This just makes it easier to skim.
Now I am going to have you "elaborate" a little more: The simple word "tiredness" doesn't paint a picture. If this is the first time you have mentioned the symptom, tell a "little" about how this is different from usual tiredness. After all, everyone gets tired. For example, "Fatigue like I've never had before. Lasted even after I rested or slept." Something that paints a little picture in the readar's mind.
After you mention each new symptom, given some idea of how long it lasted. "Lasted about two months" or "has lasted until the present."
I can't understand March 2008: Was it the same back pain? Was the burning sensation also in your back? Same with the tingling and tenderness to touch; was it in the back?
For April 2008
Back pain, tenderness, tingling continued (the same??, increased or decreased in area?)
*****Be sure to add in, where it belongs, the different testing and Dr's assessments; like:
MRI of brain without contrast showed (and I'm making this up) some white matter lesions
Saw neurologist who suspected MS, but told me it would take 7 to 10 years to diagnose. it. No further testing done. Neurologist said he would wait at least 7 years to do a spinal tap.
*********************************
Keep the report of the testing simple (you will have the actual reports if the doc wants to read them)
Finally, we need to work on the long list of symptoms for the recent month. A long list like this really is uninterpretable by the doctor and starts to look like "too much" (even though it is all true). So where you can, group the symptoms together. I'll give it a try but, I may get it wrong (because I don't have all the details) Change to the words which describe it better for you..
**********************************************8
May, 2008 to Present
• Similar symptoms continuing from March
• Tingling has spread to back and arms.
• Severe pain in arms and hands. Arms also heavy and tired (???all the time???). Hand pain is severe to the point I cannot type or play piano. (always or sometimes?) Pain is worse on right side. Right elbow also painful (when your bend or extend it??? Is it swollen or stiff??)
• Fatigue is worsening and occurs daily.
• Legs feel really tired heavy and stiff. They are painful (??the whole leg?)) worse on the right. They often feel like they will collapse after just a little exercise. They are also sensitive to the touch (worse on right side)
• Confusion (???are you really confused or having trouble with memory or details. Be more specific here. Problems remembering things, problems with your attention span, whatever. In medicine confusion is literally not knowing who, where you are)
• Meds
Given Arthrotec for pain . Didn’t help (stopped - after ???how long??)
Given Lyrica. Didn’t help (stopped - after how long??)
• Went back on gabapentin from first Neuro. (????What dose? Has this helped?)
******************************************
Do you see how all this hangs together a little better? The added "white space" from double spacing, helps the eyes to skim it better.
Finally, the last paragraph is great, but the comments about injuring your right hip in high school take the focus off what you want the doctor to be thinking about "now." I would delete them.
***********************************
Before 2005 I was very active. I ran Cross Country and Track in high school. My freshman year of college I ran a half marathon with my mother. I was running that fall. I went to school full time and worked part time. I was in really good shape and could function really well on little or no sleep. Now everything has changed. I can't do the things I want to be doing.
************************
Does this all make sense? If it does, redo the timeline with these things in mind and we'll look at it again.
Quix
It is only of the brain. With and without contrast. Do you know how long it usually takes before I can get a copy of the reports and the MRI?
Tahiri
Hey Girl! Looks really good!
And again, I am so sorry this is happening to you. It's hard to go from being such an active person to being somewhat limited, in pain, and not understanding WHY it is happening.
I wish you wellness. Let us know how your MRI goes...what is it of...brain...spine...maybe both??? Let's hope it helps leads to an answer.
Please keep us posted!!!
(((HUGS))) to you,
Wanna
I think that your timeline looks a lot better after revising it, too! :)
Excellent Job, Tahiri! You got wonderful advice from Wanna!
Take Care,
Tammy
Nice Job Tahiri!
I'm sure Wanna will give it a once over but -- nice job girl!
-be well,
SL

I went to school full time and worked part time. I was in really good shape and could function really well on little or no sleep. Now everything has changes. I have had hip pain on the left side on and off since my Freshman year of highschool. I started running with no base and probably injured myself and did nothing about it. It still acts up rather often. I meantioned it a few times, but it happens more often than that.
Tahiri
Just an MRI next teusday. I hope I can get an appointment after that, but I do not know. I might try a new doctor.
Hi...Sorry for what you have been going through...let's hope you get some answers soon.
Your timeline is pretty concise and you did a great job. The only thing I might suggest would be to bullet your items like this:
October 2005
*Severe back pain all over my back. Nothing would relieve it. Lasted 1 week
Jan 2006
*Back pain returned lasted a week.
*Back Spasms
March 2006
*Back pain and burning sensation.
*Back Spasms.
*Tingling from the waist down.
It is easier to run through that way and your doctor would be more likely not to miss anything. If you would rework it and repost it I'll take another look.
Also, make a statement about what you were like before this all started to happen to you and how this has changed you life...example: "Prior to 2005 I was very active, would walk 5 miles and day, and suddenly this all changed..." It should be more of a statement about a physical change, not an emotional change. Just be honest about how this has effected your life and how you need an answer.
I hope this has helped you and I'll be happy to do what I can if you need more help.
Do you have an appointment in the near future??
Wishing you well,
Wanna :o)
Another question. Should I describe how bad the symptoms were or just something simple like above?
Tahiri
PS sorry fo being such a bother with all of these questions I am just really new at this whole doctor thing. I was never sick much growing up. Sorry.
Bump...Will you look at this for me? I heard you were really good at timelines.
Thanks,
Tahiri
Hi there,
I haven't had to the time to give this a once over, so I'm bumping it for you.
Wanna feel well (if my memory is right) is good at these!!! We have others too....
Maybe you can hit her up in the meantime, while others work on chiming in...
be well,
-SL
Sorry I am looking this over a lot. Add shaking or trembling in my hands in 2006 and July 2007.
Add blurred vision in 2006 and confusion.
Add confusion and inability to find the words I need or remember what I am trying to say in May 2008.
