Itchiness and rashes??

Itchiness and rashes??

I have been reluctant to post this question because I am not diagnosed yet (getting results tomorrow – the MRI was 7:30 this morning), though my doctor’s office just called and told me that the preliminary report shows that I do have lesions, but I have a full appointment tomorrow.

There has been something that has been bothering me a lot lately: itchiness and rashes.

A few months ago, I developed this mysterious rash the wraps around the bottom of my left ankle.  The most disturbing part about it is it ITCHES like crazy!  All the time. I tried everything for it.  I have scratched until it bleed several times.  The reason why I still have the rash months later is because I can’t stop scratching it.  I tried wrapping it to keep my hands off – I even scratch it in my sleep.  Now I have a new rash in the crook of my elbow that itches like mad.

Is this typical in MS, does anyone have this issue?

Hi, I can't answer this with any knowledge, but if I remember right Quix has said that rashes aren't due to MS.  The itching without a visible cause is from MS.  Maybe she will pop on here and explain it for you.

Get results tomorrow, huh?  Great, please let us know what he says!!!

Take care and have a good and productive appt tomorrow!!

I do have some itching on my other leg without any rashes.  I'm thinking I may have caused the rashes with all the scratching!

I will definately update tomorrow.

It's very possible to cause one's own rash. Scratching tears up the skin and causes more bumps or itchy places, and on and on it goes.

Here's something that has worked for me. Of course give the area lots of moisturizing cream. When that has soaked in well, spray some Benadryl spray generously to cover the itchy area well. When this dries it seems to create almost a seal that air doesn't penetrate. Repeat this a couple of times a day, and sleep with a sock on. Within a few days you will see a lot of healing, but keep using the Benadryl at the first sign of break-through itching. If you're having lots of cold now the problem will be worse because your skin gets dry easily. The Benadryl will make it seem even drier, but that's okay. It works, and I've tried lots of stuff that doesn't.

I will try Benadryl. Fortunately, its in the 70s here and has been pretty warm this week (Berkeley) so that helps.  I did notice when I scratched less, my skin started to heal.  Thanks for the suggestions!

There are so many dermatological problems, that the source of the problem can be pretty endless-   stress, detergents, weather, bugs, viruses ... you get the idea.  One thing it isn't is MS, which does not cause this type of rash. Phantom itching, yes.  Actual rashes, No!

You are so right that scratching at it probably makes it worse.

Hands off, Lulu
