LDN ???

Does anyone know of low dose Naltrexone Therapy (LDN)  for MS?  My sister just called me to tell me about a Friend who swears by this for her MS. She said she just takes this and No other medications????  There is some doctor in NYC she goes to??Anyone have  any information on this?????

hi Linda, if you search this community (box right side of this page) for LDN you will find we have talked about this quite often.

LDN - low dose naltrexone - has been studied at lot, but  there is no proof that it works for MS.  There are people here who take it and report otherwise, but it is strictly anecdotal evidence.  Most who take LDN do so because they cannot 1) afford the DMD's or 2) are lacking a formal dx of MS and are looking for anything that might help.

Naltrexone is used for drug and alcohol rehab regimens and you absolutely cannot take any meds that have opoids in them while on LDN.  

LDN has been suggested for use in a whole lot of diseases, including Crohns, psoriasis, fibromyalgia, autism and cancer.  It would be wonderful if we really do have one drug that can help so many disease, but the scientific proof is lacking.  however, there are still a lot of people who swear that it works.  I just heard a talk this week that said the placebo effect in MS is good for 60% of patients... maybe the LDN is another example of an effective placebo?

If you decide to try LDN, please do it with the consultation of your doctor.

Thanks LuLu..  I am going to stick with my doctors choice which is copaxone.. I am getting it FINALLY on tuesday..after that just have to wait for the nurse!

There are some ongoing studies and a couple have finished showing the use of LDN may improve the quality of life in MS patients.   However, there is no evidence as of yet that the course of MS is afffected.  People just feel better.  Word of mouth states that it is incompatible with the Interferon meds, but a study at Stanford showed it was apparently safe with Copaxone.
