LP Update

Well yesterday I had my LP.  I have to say that as a whole, the procedure went very well.  It hurt a little but nothing like what I thought it would feel like.

The biggest pain in the butt was the mox up when we got there.

My husband and I did what they told us.  We went to the day hospital, got set up in a bed and was waiting for the neurologist to arrive to do the LP.  He shows up and says that he wanted me to get the LP in the radiology department.  The problem was that they may not be able to do anything that day.

We had already been there for almost two hours.

So the neuro goes over to radiology and has them fit me in.  Great.
W get there and the PA doing th LP says we needs a platelet count.  So we have to wait another 45 minutes.  After that there is an emergency qnd we have to wait for that to pass.  I tell my husband to go outside and take q walk or smething.  Fnally they come qnd get ame and my husband is nowhere in sight.  Really not a problem.

We get I'm there, it's done in 15 minutes and I'm out.
My husband comes up and says, "did they tell you when they'll get you in?". And i say, I already had it done.
It was actually pretty funny.

We get home, i lay flat for hours and drink tons of ice tea, wake up this morning and I'm fine.
My back hurts a little but that's to be expected.  They stuck a needle in my spine.

Question is... Wen should I get my reults?

Thanks as always guys.  I knew wht to expect because of the forum qnd I appreciate it.

Have a great weekend.

Kerri

Glad that's over for you.

15 minutes to get all the fluid needed for testing is fast, Ker! Wow. Do you know how many viles were obtained? Nosey aren't I? hahah

It can take weeks for the o-banding. The rest comes in quicker, but neuro usually waits to call until all are in.  You never know though, I remember someone on our forum who had their o-banding results in days. I was shocked.

I'm going to be a big hen, and say keep resting :)

Glad to hear it went well for you and it's over.  I agree with Shell - take it easy for a few days! It took me about a month to get the results of my LP.
Good luck!

Thanks Shell and Carol.  I am taking it easy.  I have no idea how many viles they took.  I think she said they take 40cc's.  Believe me as soon as I know I will post it on the forum.

As usual, thanks for the support.

I got my O band results in 4 days after my LP....But from what I've been reading here it can take a week or two....I live in WA state where high prevelance of ms occurs...Because of this, I believe the health community expedites quicky on ms matters...My O Band  results " >5 well defined gamma restriction bands not present in the patient's serum sample..."I was then diagnosed as definite ms....

Kerri, I've been reading that LP's that come back negative can still be an ms case...I guess what I'm trying to type is, I hope you get the answers of some problems that are plagueing your life...I don't know much, but you have similar symptoms as I and much of what you have presented here sounds ms...

I really don't want you to have a diagnosis of ms, but that diagnosis will be a relief to you....I think your limbo land is too stressing and makes things worse....

Hi Kerri.  I'm glad the actualy LP went so smoothly and you are feeling so well today.  I don't remember anyone mentioning their platelets being checked before their LP.  Maybe they wanted to be sure you weren't going to bleed too much after the procedure.  Do you take any medicines or supplements that could delay clotting?

I do wonder if they drew blood at the same time to send off with the CSF for O-band testing.  That is the part of the test that can take several weeks to get back (it is usually sent out to a regional lab) and compares any bands found in the CSF to any that are or are not found in the serum of the blood.  They don't run one part if they don't get both samples.

The parts of the LP testing done locally will be available pretty quickly but your MSologist might not get them on paper until next week some time.

Pace yourself over the weekend.  No need to stay in bed but don't over extend yourself either.  Moderate activity with frequent short rest periods usually works best to keep us going.
