LP-headache, I want to scream

It's worse when I stand up. The only thing that makes it better is when i lay on my side. Yes, it's worse than yesterday if that's even possible. I have migraines, and this is the worst one I've ever had in my life. Just tell me how to get rid of it please. who do i call, NYU or the lab?

What is causing it? If it is leak would you see it?????? my mom wants to know. I'm laying down now, and my handy laptop is on my tummy,

If I stand up I get short of breath and gaspy, i think it's from the pain.

i hope you don't mind i started a new thread, i needed you to hear me.

any words of advice would be welcome.

i just want to be done with this, i can't scream becuase it would hurt more. It hurts and is even hard to swallow. My eyes are still a bit swollen but they do look a lot better from yesterday.

the only tiny bit of relief i can find is to lay on my side. my back still hurts that way and sounds like popcorn when i breathe but ti's a lot better than that awful pain in my head that just makes me want to breathe funny, and throw up and everything. I took my migraine meds this morning, Frova, and i haven't felt anything from it yet. Bummer.

not very sunny at all, in a lot of pain, and blurry eyes,

I am so sorry, sweetie, wish I had the magic cure.  Sounds like you are miserable.  I would call your GP and ask what to do.  There has to be some way for you to relieve the pain.

You will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Ouch! I am so sorry to hear you are having this trouble.  I would  definitely call the doctor that performed the procedure first and if that doesn't work call your GP.

I hope you feel better soon,
Laura

PS I dont' think your mom would be able to see a leak - it would be internal.  The puncture hole where they did the procedure should be very very tiny and your blood would coagulate at that spot.  I think I have this right...........

Sunny,

No, you won't see the leak.  I was told if the headache subsides when you lay down, then it is a leak.

You do have to contact your Dr. or the facility you had it done at.  There are basically 2 options that I'm aware of 1) the bloodpatch, which I hear is quite instant relief or 2) lie flat for 24 hours.

I chose option #2 after my Dr. informed me because it was so horrifying I was already laying down for relief and decided to just stay there and did more than 24 hours though just for extra measure.

Hang in there, and stay flat!!!!!!!!!!

Have your mom ask about a blood patch -- I don't know much about it, but I've heard of this as a treatment for the headache.

Sorry to hear about this, I hope it passes soon!

I was writing at the same time as Shell.  I'm glad she knows more about the blood patch and has more advice.  I know before my LP I read about it and how lots of ppl say it really helps.

Good Luck!

Hi,  I have had two spinal headaches and two blood patches.  One was easy, the other more difficult but both relieved headache.  I do have to tell you though that if you don't "patch" it and decide to let it heal on it's own, it can (I repeat "can") take up to a week or so to finally heal.

When you get up, walk like Groucho Marx.  (Oh yeah, you are just a kid, you may not know who that is!  Just kidding.)  Bend completely at the waist when you walk to keep your spinal fluid pressure even.

God bless you honey, I am praying for you.  And I know how sucky that headache is.  It will get better.  Love to you, Amy

i'm going ti try to stay as flat as possible for a day....so help me if this is still here in two or three days....

i'll try walking bent over, it sounds like a good idea.

i'll check in tonight, ok?

I wrote on your last thread about how helpful and easy my bloodpatch was.  I had it done at the same hospital as my LP, but by an anethesiologist instead of a interventional radiologist, who don't perform blood patches anyway, I was told.

Call (or have your mom call) your doctor and describe everything you are going through.  I don't know for sure, but I think that if it's not getting better by now, it might not without help.

For my blood patch, this gentle wonderful woman pediatric anesthesiologis put in an IV (there is a spray on numbing medication if you need it), and gave me medicine to relax me and also some pain medication.  I wasn't really aware of what was going on, but she told me afterwards that she withdrew 20 ccs of my blood, then injected it in my (sterile) back, right into the epidural space.  The blood spreads out and covers the leak, and stops the pain right away.

Keep drinking lots of water; lots and lots, even if you have to walk bent over to the bathroom.  If you have a bowel movement, DON"T PUSH.  If you need to cough or blow your nose, try to do it gently.  Straining puts more pressure on that leak.

I had three punctures (bad doc!), and leaked alot of CSF.  My eyes were affected because of the lack of CSF pressure, or the change in it.   I drank buckets of water, caffeine, and all that, and then called about the blood patch on day two or three, and had it done the next morning.

If you have a blood patch done, make sure it is done by someone that really knows what they are doing, and understands what you've been going through. Ask your Mom to ask questions and demand the best; you deserve it.

Only restoring the pressure (healing the leak) will stop the headache.  If lying flat doesn't do it, then a blood patch will.

Bunches of love,

Kathy

ack..........

My mom called and i need your opinion, any one reading this can pitch in, ok????

The guy who did the LP was the one they found to put on the phone, yes, the resident. So, Mr. Know It Almost All told my mom that it was just a migraine and i was ok. Of course, my mom told him that it was NOTTTT!!!! He then asked how my back looked and when she said ok, he was about to go and she asked him about a leak and he said that he'd certianly never had that happen to one of his patients. Mom asked him what he was going to do, and he said if i get worse i can come into the ER.

I DON'T WANT HIM TO TOUCH ME AGAIN!!!!!!!!!

Am i ok in thinking this? This guy isn't to great here, what should i do?

Dronking lots, walking so hunched over that Groucho guy would be proud (hey it does REALLLY help, thanks a LOT for that tip!!!)

I'm going to make it, i just don't want to go back to that resident guy...... i'm scared ...... really scared,,,,, ok,,,,, more scared than i was of the LP.

So, now we wait and see if it gets worse.

Thanks for the support.

I don't know anything... but I'll be praying for you!

(And personally, I might call the hospital's ER director or administrator or something.  If they are scared of you, they're more likely to hop to it and help you.)

You are the patient, the one paying the bill, the one whose body has been hurt.  You have a right to ask for someone else to perform the blood patch.

Please ask your wonderful mom to call back and ask to speak the supposed expert that watched the resident perform so poorly on you.  Have her explain that it is clearly not a migraine, that migraines don't feel better when you lay down and then feel like you've been hit with a sledge hammer when you stand up (she might want to word that differently).  :o)  Are all residents so full of themselves?

Looking back, the guy that did my LP said I couldn't have a spinal headache already, it would take 3 or 4 days.  He wouldn't listen, so I called my neurologist, my PCP's advice nurse, and anyone else I could think of that might help.  The neurologist said that the doc who did it was responsible, so I called him back, and he gave me a phone number to call.  It was for pediatrics.  I called the neuro again, and her assistant gave me the right number to get ahold of the pediatric anesthesiologist who did my blood patch.

If this doctor doesn't agree to help, then ask to speak to someone who will.  Calling the ER isn't a bad idea; they might have someone working that can do a wonderful job.

Maybe your mom should call the anesthesilogy department.  Heck, I'm just trying to think of anyway to get the pain out of sweet head that should be sunny instead of aching so bad!

Love,

Kathy

Sunny,  I feel confident enough to say it's not a migraine.  Talk to a Dr. not the resident Dr.

I see now why you are afraid.  Stay flat for now! Only get up a bit to potty and eat...

ok, i'm glad that you thought i wasn't being picky or anything, but i seriously didn't want him again. I'm sure he thought i was over-reacting or something during that procedure but well, "oh my GOODNESS" just about summs it up.

thank goodness for lap tops, they fit nicely on my tummy and i'm not going crazy that way just laying here feeling miserable.

I'm calling NYU in the morning, and if they say i need to go somewhere, we shall. If i get any worse we are going somewhere. And if it still feel this bad in the morning, you can bet your last dollar we are also going somwhere. And I like your ideas, Kathy.... I shall call everyone I can get my hands on if this doesn't get better..... that's a nice IF. I'm still hoping it goes away when i lay down. when i get up i, well, yeah... i just wonder why on earth i didn't do it at NYU when i was up there.

Also, if we go back to that place, you get I'm praying my head off for a different doc. In fact, if it weren't so complicated with friendships and possible job possibilities at that very hospital I'd just tell mom to take me to another one of our four hospitals here. Why, oh why did this have to turn out so icky? This was supposed to be short, sweet and easy!!!!! Sigh.

Still here and just hanging out on Medhelp, basically becuase it's either that or start screaming about my head again.

S'funny, i can type fast. but when mom tries to get me to talk, everythings coming out all jumbly. Guess it takes a different part of the brain, huh?Must have mom a bit worried now... She's pushing liquids now, she handing me stuff to drink every so often.

Talk to you later!

It does take a different part of the brain to talk...  Often, I've had problems communicating verbally, but was able to type just fine.  However, I've noticed my typing comes out jumbled - all the letters are inverted, or I'll try to use the wrong word.  This has gotten better, but it's not completely improved.

Hi!  I'm sorry about the spinal headache.  I'm positive that's what it is.  I had mine for two weeks--I couldn't get the blood patch where I live, so that's why I didn't get it.   Sometimes spinal headaches can last even longer than two weeks.  I felt the way you did, wanting to scream, and actually did!!!!!!  But, as you figured, it didn't do anything but make things worse.

Caffeine does help seal up the hole.  That's one thing I didn't do much of, because I was off a caffeine completely prior to the LP and didn't want to get addicted to it again.  However, I drank caffeine anyway to speed up the healing process.  The weaning off the caffeine, wasn't that bad.  Are you able to have caffeine?

If you are not better or it gets worse and you go to the ER please do not forget to wear sunglasses. Make sure that there is no outstanding pressure in the area of the spine or around the head(i.e.hair bows, pony tails, etc. Somthing that can also help is warm steam towels around your shoulders and neck. Don't drink anything too cold and some over the counter analgesics will have the added benifit of caffine, in case the thought of coffee at this stage of the pain you are in makes you want to get sick.

I do hope that you feel better soon. Lay down and do not get up but to go urinate or have a BM and of you do need to have a BM DO NOT STRAIN!

Take care and post as soon as you feel better.

Just got in from work and checked in on your post : )...I am hoping by the time you read this your feeling better!!  I have heard a lot about the blood patch and all of it has been positive and that it's instant relief.  A good friend of mine, a nurse, told me that IF I got that nasty spinal headache, NOT to wait, to go right on to the ER, and they'd do it and it'd be immediate relief.  I didn't have to go.  And I'm not sure what I'd do if I were in your shoes.  I'm praying for you and praying it'll go away on it's on.  It sounds like you're doing all the right things by laying flat and drinking lots of fluids.

Hope you're feeling SUNNY again soon!!

Take advice from a two time spinal headache sufferer - GET HELP!  I had a spinal along with general done when I had a kidney removed a few years ago and experience a headache like never before.  I had two blood patches done and until they done the third one under fluoroscopy I did not get any releif unless I was laying flat on my back.  When I was diagnosed with MS I did not think twice about the small procedure of spinal tap.  Boy was I wrong.  It was the same gamet, days of laying flat, drinking caffeine, and taking cafeine pills.  I then received a blood patch in the ER only to be disappointed again.  Two days later, fighting optic neuritis and trying to go through the steroid treatment I was still miserable.  I then went for a second blood patch but the anesthesiologist could not get the needle to thread and I was sent home to return the next day to the pain clinic where a blood patch was applied again under fluoroscopy.  This way they are able to see exactly where they need to place the blood patch and I received instatnce releif.  Be preseistent and dont let them tell you how you feel.  Being diagnosed with MS, epilepsy, and celiacs disease all within a 30 day period has made me realize the need to be an advocate for myself.  Life is too short - wish you well and good luck.

And if you do go to ER,  tell them the name of the doc you DON"T want, tell them you will REFUSE to see him.  If he shows up, politely tell him not to touch you.  This is your right.  There is actually a "bill of rights" for patients, and you can decide who treats you.
What a joke for him to say a spinal headache has never happened to any of his patients.  How many has he done to think himself so wonderful????  I'm  mad at him for you!
I hope you feel better soon.

Hi, Sunny & Everyone.

Sunny and I have been messaging, but I just want to tell everyone what the anesthesiologist told me last fall when she did my blood patch.

I laid flat for over a week, the headache was so bad, I couldn't lift my head. When I went in for the blood patch, the anesthesiologist told me it was DANGEROUS to wait, and that it is a myth that lying flat will prevent the headache.

The Neuro that did my LP told me, if an LP hurts, it's being done wrong.

sigh, i typed a whole message and it's gone. Ok, to try again.

We called the hosp. again this morning and got our friend, Doc. number three, who was originally supposed to do the LP. He said that becuase they drew so much fluid off that I am going to have a horrid head-ache. He said that I have to stay flat. KNEW THAT. He also said that I needed to double my fluids and eat lots of sugars and carbs and he would call in a painkiller and that i needed to stay flat through monday. HE said that there is a possibility of leak with all that fluid they pulled off.

Basically, i think that was a wait and see dear, if this doesn't get better. So.... we wait and see. Because that hosp. said so. Sigh, and sigh and yell.

I'm now yelling everytime i get up, but you know, i'm still laughing when i'm laying down so the pain and I are about even. I'll post to let everyone know I'm ok.

I suppose that's all we can do. If I still feel like my heads caught in a visegrips and i am yelling on Monday we will just have to go for help. till then, i survive, i suppose. This will be the longest week-end EVER. how did some of you guys ever go two weeks?

My mom says I have to drink that glass of juice before she gets back, so i'd better go. if I don't she'll make me laugh and then, well, my head will hurt and have you ever tried to quick drink a whole glass of juice through a straw in the time it take a person to get from a car to the door? not to safe, I tell you.....

Smile everyone for me....

Hi Sunny.  Did you see my PM from last night?  I think you should call NYU and have them tell Dr. Kister that you have a severe headache and the neuro in Alabama thinks it is just a migraine.  Ask if he thinks you should go to the ER??

If you don't want to call Kister, then go ahead and go to the ER in a different hospital if yu think there is a good one out there.  Like I told you, a blood patch to repair a leak is painful so NO RESIDENTS and SEDATIVES prior to the procedure.

Tell them you have scoliosis and possible spina bifida.    I am off to go to get medicine for my son who needs a root canal for an infected tooth.  I will be back later.  I am concerned that  once you get into the weekend, the hospital care will be none too good.

If you had to rate your pain fon a scale of one to ten, ten being the worse, what is your number when lying flat.  If you answer this in the next ten minutes I will still be here.
Elaine

Take care Sunny.

Maybe you should try doctor #4?  I really don't think you should have to be in so much pain.  I kind of agree with Sheila's anesthesiologist.  I don't know about the danger part of it, but I see know reason to be in such excruciating pain.

This is the first time I've heard about a spinal headache happening DURING the LP, though I admit I'm no expert; far from it.  It just seems wrong, and it also seems wrong, this "wait and see" attitude when you, our friend, is lying there in PAIN.

I don't understand why they want to put off doing a blood patch.  Correct me if I'm wrong, anyone, but I think it is very low risk and high benefit.  I don't understand having a person go through all that pain!

The pain is caused by loss of CSF pressure.  If it is not improving, when you are lying flat and drinking lots and lots of fluid, then it seems to me that the leak is still there, and should be dealt with.  To leave you in pain seems barbaric.  Maybe they don't have anyone that is good at doing blood patches.

Have you called NYU to get their opinion?  I've been worrying, too, because I remember how badly mine hurt (and I was home alone!), and it sounds like yours is even worse.

If your pain is getting worse, please consider calling someone else for another opinion.  Especially if the pain medicine doesn't help much.  I want you better!

I am with Fluffysmom. You need relief and if you were a dog yelping in pain you would get help so call NO GO! to the Dr and demand something be done. BTW after all of this is over, you need to do a formal complaint against the Dr who did the puncture and then the hospital for that seeming to be their standard of care.

I do hope that you get well soon.

I hate to disagree with Elaine (sorry Sweetie, you know I love and respect you) but a blood patch is not supposed to be painful. I had one and it was NOT painful. If it is painful, they're doing it wrong.

Believe me, this skinny old body feels pain intensely and they did give me anesthesia before the blood patch. I felt better, after the blood patch almost immediately.

I hope you don't get tired of being bossed around, but GO TO THE HOSPITAL.  I havn't been around enough to know everyone's story, but I don't know of many who had a headache for more than 48 hours who didn't need a patch.

Especially since you have additional issues,  I think an medical opinion about how much your head hurts is a good idea.

I have no idea if it a painful procedure, but even if it is for a few minutes, it would be worth it to get rid of that terrible headache.

You can't boss away, i will try to listen, no promises, my folks take good care of me though.

Is chills normal with this kind of head-ache,

On a scale of one to ten, i've got a head-ache of eleven. I've only felt pain this one twice in my life, and that was when i broke a bone and had to have my gallbladder removed. Am i describing the pain ok? To be specific. Very, very bad.

Doc. number three called in pain meds. Am praying they work.

Mom didn't want to call NYU becuase she didn't think they could do anything down here, with them so far. I away, i disagreed, but don't feel like arguing... if i think in more than one or two sentences i either laugh or cry.... and that's when i'm flat. Standing up, i moan or yell or just fall over...

Very, very long week-end ahead. Please, don't worry to much. I hate to worry you.

We will hang in there, and if it's not better, we will call again. And i think maybe Elaine gave me an e-mail address for NYU? If i'm not too fuddled i'll use it and maybe i'll get a reply on monday.

Stay flat as much as possible.  Tell you parents that I prescribe "Being waited on, Hand and Foot, for the next three days."  If the headache doesn't begin to ease up, you will need a blood patch.  Put in a call to Dr. Kister.  Let her/him know what has happened and that they let a resident do the patch and that he has denied that you could have a spinal headache, because he is too good.  Ask if they would intervene on your behalf to get the blood patch done under fluoroscopy, if you need it.

Take care, hun, this will pass.  I have had one from a botched anesthesia and I do know what you are going through.  It's what I use as my "10" when I have to rank my pain level.

Everyone is correct.  If you ever feel that you are not in good medical hands, you have the absolute right - even in the middle of a procedure - to tell them to stop and that you want a different doc.  You also should not let this resident do the blood patch.  If he is dismissive, then he is being taught to be that way, and we see where all the arrogance comes from in the neurology specialty.

We need never accept medical care from a doctor who is uncaring, seems incompetent or who insults us.

You may me laugh, even when you're in pain!  You are such a sweetheart!

I feel for you, honey.  I've been there.  As soon as Monday morning 8:00 rolls around, I'd call NYU.  I think as soon as you call, they'll set you up with a bloodpatch in 'Bama.  This will provide instead relief and you'll be back to feeling half-way normal (whatever that means, huh?).

Try to keep your spirits up, it really does help.  Don't let yourself get upset.  I remember crying my eyes out one day, and it really made things worse!!!!!!!  I can't think of any other time that I was in such hideous pain, either--and I've had two babies and have had a major surgery!!!!!  Remember to keep those spirits high--watch comedies, eat your favorite flavor of ice cream, have someone paint your toe nails, and by all means write to your friends on this forum!!!!!

I agree with Quix honey...you need to STAY LYING DOWN!  You ONLY GET UP TO PEE or poop and then you go lie down again!!  When you do get up you bend over at the waist and walk to the bathroom in this position...you want to keep your head below your shoulders for the most comfort ok?  You need to relax and put in a good movie and have little stimulation...get off the computer...you need to have your head down...not tilted toward your tummy...you need your eyes to rest...you need to rest.  I know it is incredibly boring but if you do take some of the pain meds that the dr. prescribed, while I don't honestly think they will do anything for the pain they may relax you and convince you to sleep and at this point I think it would be the best thing for you.
Ok... I am finished sweetie but please try to relax and just lie still ok?  I am sure you will be fine but it does take time and your ability to remain still is also going to make you heal faster ok?

SO...take your pill...go do a pee...lie down and shut off the computer and tell Mom to take it away for tonight and we will talk to you tomorrow ok honey?  We will all be here thinking of you but you won't miss anything I promise and think of how much more you will have to look forward to reading tomorrow when you get up ok?

Goodnight sweetie and have sweet pain free dreams ok?

quix, deb, laura, and rena... and  everyone else....thank you.

Still same NO bettter. Still laying flat. Dumb head-ache.

A question:

Anyone out there figured out how to eat soup while laying flat on their back? Smile.

Well, I've made it three full days, either this pain is getting normalish or now i'm just getting fuzzy. My folks say i go gray when i stand up to go to the bathroom and then i return to a normalish color when i lay down.

It's Sat. so i was good and didn't post Friday night.

I'm glad you guys say this is going to end. Becuase if you didn't, well....

I'm thinking today i'll have to figure out something fun to do beside stare at my why ceiling... and you're right my computer doesn't help any. I do feel bad missing most of the past two weeks and not welcoming anyone or anything. :+) I think I'll take up your ideas and dig out some ice-cream and see if a fiend or two can't come over for a movie. Hopefully they won't mind my crazy hair.

TTYL,

Thinking of you and praying for you my dear.  Here's a favorite scripture:  "The prayer that is said with failth will make the sick person well.  And the Lord will heal that person".  James 5:15..  Remember, He is on your side.  Love to you, Amy

I'm worried for you.  I'll send prayers and healing thoughts your way.  But a trip to he ER might be helpful too!  If for no other reason than to reassure all of US here.  :)

Hi, Sunny Bunny.

You've gotten the word here, you need that blood patch.

So, tomorrow I expect your folks to call and demand it!

Lots of Love,
Sheila
