Looking for Vision Info

Ok I have both blurred vision and double vision. I also have an appointment coming up with my eye doctor on the 4th and am looking for info prior to seeing her about what to do with my vision problem.

Over the last 6 months or so my Neurologist has documented my vision changing from 20/20 to 20/30, 20/40, and finally at the last appointment 20/20 again. I probably was seeing better than 20/20 at the last appointment as the nurse stoped me when I got the 20/20 line on the chart correct but I could make out the next line as well. Also my vision probably gets worse than the 20/40 but I do not go out on those days.

I had seen in a couple of posts something about prisms in glasses for the double vision. That is what drives me crazy and I have it most days but not always.

1. Does it really help with that?
2.  Does it mess up your vision when you are not experiencing double vision?
3. if anyone has this type of drastic changes in vision what do you do about it? Multiple glasses? Maybe something like a telescope with adjustable focus?
4. Any other suggestions?

I too have vision problems. For the longest time, the blurred or double vision seemed to impact only my distance vision. That changed 3 weeks ago where my near vision was affected with me seeing double.

I wear progressive lenses and have astigmastism in both eyes. Four years ago, prisms were added to my prescription. The first Rx was too strong. I go to the eye doctor once a year and have had minimal changes in Rx over the past 4 years.

Because the problem comes and goes, it's hard to know what to do. Some days I can read the signs on the highway, other days I can't see them until I am right up on them. There are days when my vision is so bad that I dare not drive.

I noticed a significant change in my near vision 3 weeks ago, most noteably in my right eye. I have an appointment with the eye doctor next Friday. I kind of worry as to whether this is temporary or permanent.

My new neuro wants the eye doctor to conduct a field vision test.

I guess I'll just have to wait and see (pun intended).

Yes I remember the eye cups and had been looking for one, but could not think of what they were called. As soon as you mentioned the name of them I did a quick search on the Internet and found a bunch of them at Amazon.

I do hold the lower lid down like you said. The problem is that I can't hit even that area with the drops. Instead they end up on my cheek, eyebrow, nose, everywhere but where they are meant to be.

Thanks for the name of the eye cup. I'll have to look at all of them and see what looks like it might work.

Me and you and the IOP...We need to write a book!
Lol.....I go back to optho next week.  Will see if get anymore info
on the Autonomic Dysfunction and the IOP......Vs  MS and IOP...

keep updated with me and I will you. Perhaps we can put the pieces of the puzzle togather between the two of us and both Optho's...

Hi Dennis.  I use a gel type drop for my eyes if they get dry.  It's usually happened because the CPAP I wear at night got crooked and blew air across my eyes as I slept.  Back when I wore contacts I got very practiced in putting in my own eye drops.

I find it works best if I pull down a little on the skin under my lower eyelid.  This will form a little pocket in the lower lid where I can deposit the drop without making myself blink.  Once it's in there I just slowly close my eye and let it bathe the entire eye surface.  Repeat on the other eye if necessary.

Because I'm very much right handed and my nose gets in the way, I do often lose an extra drop or two from misfires in the left eye.  All-in-all in works pretty well though.  I think B&L makes the drop I use (OTC).  There is also a night-time ointment that is wonderful if you need it but definitely not something I'd try on a whim.  Talk about gummin' up the works.

Anybody here remember the old-fashioned eye bath or eye cup?  I remember my grand and my mother using one to 'bathe' the eye in salt water.  I might even still have one in the BR cupboard.

Yes the Binocular DV is bad, especially when it occurs while I'm also having the monicular DV. During those times I will see 4 images at once and I know to head directly to bed, do not pass go, do not collect $200. :)

I have not heard of the gel type of eye drops. Not sure if I could get them into my eyes as I have enough trouble with the regular drops. Half of it ends up on my face as I can't seem to get the aiming down pat. I'm suppose to put 2 drops in each eye and it take 10 or 12 drops in order to get just 2 in them.

I have had the Monocular DV for years and have gone through many sets of glasses in that time. Plus I only have the astigmatism in my left eye, but both eyes have the double vision. I also have the DV before, during, and after puting drops in my eyes. The Monocular DV will last for weeks at a time, then clear up for several months, than back again for several more weeks. My current Rx for glasses is only 1 year old. In fact I think I was going through a flare during that time so now when my vision is good I can see better than 20/20.

I have my eyes dialated every time I see my eye doctor. The only thing she has found was that my IOP is slightly elevated and  (not sure if I remember this correctly) a slight bulging of the disc or optic nerve or something like that in the left eye. She thinks that is from the elavated IOP and not due to MS. and she has me on more eye drops to keep the IOP under control.

Thank you for taking the time to respond to this post. It does mean a lot to me.

If the binocular double vision is "only" for 1-2 days, and eye patch would probably be your best choice. I put "only" in quotations, because I don't think "only" is the best word, when the double vision is so awful.

When the Binocular double vision occurs, it can be part of a flare, and is indeed part of the eye muscles not functioning properly. There are 6 muscles in each eye. but they dont affect the astigmatism. They effect the alignment of the eye itself.

The monocular double vision can be affected by dry eyes.  have you tried the gel type of eye drops. They seem to work longer than the tear type.

How old is your prescription? Perhaps the astigmatism is not corrected well enough?

Have you had your eyes dilated recently? Perhaps a small cataract is developing, or lots of other things.  I see you are seeing an ophthalmologist soon.  I am sure they will dilate your eyes and give you a good exam.

Thinking of you,
Michelle

Thanks for the info!

I go to the VA for all of my health care so I think she is just a regular Optho...nothing special.

My Binocular double vision usually only last about 1-2 days at a time. When it is happening if I look at my monitor from about 6 feet away there are 2 distict images next to each other. In other words the images are about 17 inches apart.

The vision deviation I suspect is from ON though no docotr has confirmed this. The blurred vision goes on for several months at a time.

The monocular double vision is what drives me real crazy. I do have dry eyes, but no amount of eye drops clears it up. I also have astigmatism in my left eye which is corrected for, but I get the Monocular DV in both eyes to the same extent. This also goes on for long periods of time and then clears up for months. It also seems to happen more when my other Sx are flaring up. Do you think it could be something like the muscles around the eyes are acting up due to a flare which is inducing a distortion to my eye balls. (Astigmatsim)?

Double vision with BOTH eyes open, can be helped with Fresnel Prisms (Plastic stick on lens, that sits on the inside of your lens) if the double vision is not that far apart.

Meaning your eye(s) deviate in/out/or up and it is not a large turn.

Have you had Optic Neuritis? That "could" explain the fluctuation in your vision.(20/40-20/20).

You can solve the double vision by wearing an eye patch until you see the ophthalmologist. Is it a Neuro or Pediatric Ophthalmologist? Those are the 2 types of specialized ophthalmologists that would deal with Fresnel prisms. You can always call yours and see if they have these in the office.

All the the above are only correction for BINOCULAR double vision, meaning with both eyes open.

MONOCULAR double vision is not treated with prisms. The cause of this type of double vision is caused by something in the eye, not the brain. Such as a cataract, not corrected astigmatism, a corneal issue, dry eyes,Retinal problem, etc.

Your doc can differentiate between these 2 types of double vision.

Good luck to you,

Michelle

Hmm not sure its called quad vision though it sounds good, i just think your weird lol :-)

I dont know if my sight issues are true double vision or not, its something that has been coming and going for a few years. My optomotrist has never been able to work it out because its only in the past, lasted a few months at a time but when it started it was for a day or two and put down to reading too much. She believes me but hasnt been able to catch it per say, though she has noted the change in light sensitivity declining significantly in the last few years but i should be able to see perfectly acording to the tests i've had, yeah i wish lol.

After the big 09 episode it didnt go away, it did get better than it was but i dont think i'd pass if i could get my self back there. What i see all the time now is a gost effect, when looking at something in the distance, nothing is crisp and clean, people are hard cause you require the ability to see features and i just cant see the detail. i try and use peoples out line if i'm looking for someone.

Up close its like the gost is more pronounced, the image superimposed on top of another eg. if i look at the F11 key on my keyboard what i see isnt an 'F' or anything that resembles a letter, theres another F half way ontop of the first F, to me its like a japaneese symbol. The numbers are easier to work out but the symbol is followed by 111, not quite what i asume is a true double picture (F11F11), can you have half-ies?

When the big 09 episode began, i did have an invisible ice pick shoved in my left eye ball, head didnt hurt just the blasted eye ball, though so much was happening at the same time it hardly rated on the i'm bothered by this register. lol Yesterday i had to hide out for a while, it felt like my eyeballs were in a vice, being squashed from the back of the eyeball, left worse than the right, nothing much helped, though when i put my closed eyeball on my hot coffee cup. The OMG my eyeball is on fire feeling was better than the pain LOL dont ask me how my eyeball ended up resting on the hot cup, cause i'm not sure how that one happened. Yes i know i'm weird ROFL!

So do you think its blurred, double or halves-ies that i'm seeing? I cant read very well anymore though i've worked around the issue as best i can using a large computer monitor but i still need magnifying glasses or even thats too difficult and i feel a bit sea sick lol.

Cheers.........JJ

Dennis, I have the monocular form, i.e., no matter which eye is open, I always see two images.  I'd been told previously that this means the cause is central (brain), but from what I just read in this thread, that might not always be the case.

My images usually overlap.  If you hold up one finger & ask me how many I see, the answer is one, but it has double edges all around.  Go figure.  I only see two of everything if the thing seen is really skinny -- like alphanumeric characters when trying to read.

Yes, the prism helps, a lot.  I can't tell you why, but it does.  The biggest problem was that they tried it with a temporary stick-on fresnel prism, and it kept getting unstuck and/or dirty.  Michelleric works with these all the time, and she was very helpful to me.

I agree that this makes reading very, very difficult.  Prism has helped a lot.

Oh, now when I take off my glasses, my brain wants to see what the prism's been doing, but it's not doing it anymore.  Big time conflict, and the brain just doesn;'t handle that well at all.

Peace, prayers, blessings, etc.  Going for lunch with my sweetie.

I don't know if this helps or not but my neuro said that double vision with the use of both eyes was often down to damage in the brain /optic nerve and DB with one eye is often damage to the eye.

I'm not sure about this myself as I have had both too, however I have had ON on a number of occasions, twice bad enough to leave me blind in one eye. The weak eye muscles it can cause can result in convergence disorder, hence the DB when using both eyes.

Actually I have both types of double vision and they both come and go. So I guess I should say I quad vision. :)

Luckily so far they both haven't happened at the same time, or at least I don't think they have. The monocular version is one image above the other and the binocular version is side by side.

The monocular basically make it very difficult to read anything, while the binocular version really send me for a loop and I have to close one eye as soon as it startes or I get nasius (sp?) and feel like I'm going to pass out. It really throughs my sense of balance off. Which make sense since one of my Neuros told me that I am relying on visual clues for my balance.

Ok you guys had me confused, I only knew about Double vision (Diplopia) as the conversion type, and not prior heard of double vision in one eye, its called Monocular diplopia btw.

Monocular diplopia can occur when something distorts light transmission through the eye to the retina. There may be > 2 images. One of the images is of normal quality (eg, brightness, contrast, clarity); the other(s) are of inferior quality. The most common causes of monocular diplopia are

Cataract
Corneal shape problems, such as keratoconus or surface irregularity
Uncorrected refractive error, usually astigmatism
Other causes include corneal scarring and dislocated lens.

See this site for other double vision vs blurred vision info:

http://www.merck.com/mmpe/sec09/ch098/ch098e.html

Though the only thing it says regarding treatment is to treat the underlying condition, so not that helpful really but for those that are still interested its at least informative.

Cheers..........JJ

hmmm I don't think prisms would help with double vision in one eye.

That wouldn't help me. I get double vision with only 1 eye open. And both eyes do it. So an eye patch would not help.

Ok I should have mentioned that I wear glasses 24/7. Far vision is just for astigmtism and near has +150 to help me see closer object ( computer screen) at a further distance. Plus vision correction.

Michelleric works in this field and may be able to answer all of your questions. she works today so a PM might be the best way to contact her as she usually is too tired to check the boards , but she does check pm.

Good luck with the vision. I hope it improves.

As a temporary solution until the 4th you might try an eye patch over one eye. It does help with the double vision and you don't have to squint as much! Mine has resolved except for a little nystagmus in the right eye yet. However, I am keeping that eye patch handy!

I wear prism glasses and they have helped a lot with my vision issues.  They don't prevent me from seeing double all of the time, but it definitely makes my vision more comfortable.  I get less headaches, less fatigue, and less eye pain since I started wearing prism lenses - oh I guess it's been about 3 years now.  My vision is kind of crazy though.  My glasses are trifocal progression lenses because one eye is near sighted and the other is far.  They are also correcting a large astigmatism, and they have the prism, so my glasses are really complicated. So I don't know how they would incorporate a prism if they didn't need to correct for acuity issues.

Seems like Pastor Dan has prisms.  I have double vision too, so I'll stay tuned to this thread and see what they say.

And I have really bad vision, that gets worse and then better, but never 20/20.  So I'm used to not being able to see very well!  Fortunately one eye sees better than the other (my left) so I use that one to see with, and the right to doublecheck depth.
