MS AND DENTAL PAIN

HELLO ALL,
I HAVE A QUESTION, I WAS HAVING SOME PINS AND
NEEDLES IN MY LEFT FOOT THE OTHER DAY, THEN
IT SPRAED IN TO MY LOWER LEG, IT DID NOT
LAST LONG, THEN THE NEXT DAY I STARTED WITH
BAD PAIN IN MY UPPER GUMS, LIKE I HAD AN INFECTION
OR SOMETHING, THEN PINS AND NEEDLES IN MY FINGER TIPS.
FINGER TIPS STOPPED AFTER ABOUT A HAFE HR.
WOKE UP YEATERDAY TO GO TO DENTIST AND THERE
WAS NO MORE PAIN IN MY MOUTH, BY THE WAY IT WAS
BAD FOR 3 TODAYS, DENTIST SAID NO INFECTION.
IS THIS MY ILLNESS? DAM, IT IS ALL NEW TO ME.
HOPE ALL ARE DOING WELL.  KITT

Hey, me too.  My family will laugh hysterically at me and I'm sure you will too but here it goes anyway.

I woke up a couple of years ago and was almost in tears because I had such a horrible toothache.  I took my false teeth out, checked them over real good and couldn't find a dang thang wrong with them.  I put them back in my mouth and boom the same thing, a horrible toothache.  Finally after lots of floss and extra efferdent it went away.  So the next time any of you have a toothache you gotta try what I did, it really works.

I'll be praying,
Carol

WELL, LAST NIGHT I HAD THE WORST LIGHTENING BOLT OF PAIN LASH THROUGH THE LEFT SIDE OF MY FACE WHILE CHEWING.  THIS MORNING I TOOK MY FOOT IN HAND AND HOPPED TO SEE A DENTIST.  THE TEETH ARE NORMAL AND HEALTHY.  SO MY PAIN IS CLEARLY NEUROPATHIC AND PROBABLY AN ATYPICAL FORM OF TRIGEMINAL NEURALGIA.

IF THE PAIN CONTINUE THIS SEVERELY I WILL TELL MY NEURO AND SEE ABOUT NEURONTIN OR LYRICA.  IN THE MEANTIME I AM GOING TO TRY ALPHA LIPOIC ACID 600MG PER DAY.  THIS IS USED IN EUROPE WITH SOME REPORTED SUCCESS.  IT'S A SUPPLEMENT OVER THE COUNTER.

JUST AN UPDATE ON THIS APPARENTLY COMMON PROBLEM IN MS.

MY PAIN WOULD START IN THE ONE LOWER MOLAR AND THEN OVER THE NEXT HOUR OR SO SPREAD TO INCLUDE THE UPPER MOLARS, THE ENTIRE LENGTH OF THE JAW AND THE AREA IN FRONT OF MY EAR.  MY FACE WAS STILL TENDER AND ACHEY THIS MORNING.

I seem to be kind of in the same boat as the rest of you with this dental/jaw pain.  Several months back my dentist tried to tell me it was TMJ, but it just didn't fit the description.  Recently (past week or 2), I've been having some severe pain.  At first I thought it was stemming from a cavitity I recently got filled.  But it would spread from the top to the bottom teeth, and then through the jaw right under the ear.  I was actually quite depressed last night reading about TN, which I'm beginning to be convinced it is.  I can't imagine living with this!  It definitely seems to get worse with stress and temperature.  I get a high fever (102+) with my Rebif shot sometimes, and it really hurts then.  Yesterday I was in agony, and I was dealing with an extremely stressful situation at work.  Any suggestions if this is TN?  I was on Lyrica, but recently switched to Neurontin.  Angela

THANKS SO MUCH FOR ALL YOUR REPOSES,
I AM SO SORRY ABOUT YOUR CAT, I JUST LOST
MY CAT OF 16 YRS,  RENAL FAILURE, I LET HER DIE AT
HOME WITH ME BY HER SIDE. AS FOR THE DENTIST,
I CAN NOT TELL YOU ALL, HOW AFFRAID I WAS TO GO
AND ALSO EMBARRASSED, BECAUSE OF MY TREMORS.
I HAVE TO GO BACK ON THE 7TH OF JAN, THE DAY AFTER MY 49TH
BIRTHDAY, FOR A DEEP ROOT CLEANING. I AM TAKING VALIUM 10 MGS.
I WILL BE TAKING MY HEAD PHONES ALSO, BY THE WAY
THAT IS A GREAT IDEA, THIS WAY I WILL NOT HEAR THE DRILL.
I AM SCARED TO DEATH, BUT MY DENTIST IS GREAT.
THANKS MY FRIENDS

I'm so sorry about your furry friend. Mine is the canine variety and I love her madly. She's here on my lap right now. Best wishes to Abby and an extra-special treat.

But as to dentists, I do commiserate. There are indeed sadists out there, just as there are "evil neuologists." (Hmmm, someone around here uses that term. Who could that be?) Still, you need to fortify yourself to go. Craig makes some great suggestions along those lines.

Wouldn't it be nice if your dental misery were caused by just one tooth gone bad, and if that could be fixed? Referred pain is very common in tooth woes. It doesn't 'refer' to the other side of the mouth, but anything in one half can cause pain anywhere else there, upper or lower. Sometimes it's hard for dentists to chase this down. As to the antibiotics, I'd guess your doc was just covering all the bases in case of an abscess in the making.

Anyway you look at it, you should really check into this. Afterwards drown your sorrows in a MochaChocoFrappaCappuFrangipani super grande double latte with whipped cream!

Quix, my wife is terrified of the dentist.  As a child the dentist drilled her teeth with no novacaine .  He yelled at her all the time and called her a baby.  Once she got Hashimotos disease her teeth started to get many cavities.

Because her tooth enamel is going away she has needed many root canals and is now getting 15 cavities filled, two at a time.  Anyway, she has learned to tolerate the dentist by taking 1 or 2 mg of Ativan  an hour before the appt, and by making the dentist give her double the novacaine shots.  And she wears a headset with music cd's on loud volume to drown out the noise of the drill.

With all those things in place, she is able to get her teeth fixed.  So some suggestions for you after you get some funds.

Have you ever looked into the dental clinic at OHSU??  Maybe their rates are more reasonable.

I have had periodic nerve pain in teeth that have cavities filled.  the dentist X-rays them and they look fine.  I have also had pain  in teeth that have had a root canal  the dentist says it must be some kind of nerve phenomenon and gives me an antibiotic.  The pain then goes away.  have no idea why I get the antibiotic though.

So long story short, you probably do not need the dentist now but when you do,  try some of those things to decrease your anxiety.  Hopefully it will make the appts more bearable.

I hope Abby is at least comfortable.

Craig

You make me laugh.  I am sooo chicken ---- to go to the dentist!  I have to take ativan to get me into the chair.  It is not so much that they will hurt me, as it is I feel trapped, usually with a couple of hovering masked faces leaning over me.  I just want to rip the **** out of my mouth and run for the hills never looking back.  Of course, you should go to the dentist!!!!   I haven't gone in 5 years, except for ex rays and a lecture.

WELL, I AM HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM.  FOR THE LAST YEAR I PERIODICALLY GET SEVERE, LIGHTENING-LIKE JABS OF PAIN IN A LOWER MOLAR.  I HAVE FILLING IN THAT TOOTH.  BUT, IT WOULD ONLY HAPPEN EVERY SO OFTEN.  THEN THIS FALL IT BEGAN HAPPENING ALMOST EVERY DAY.  AFTER A BAD PAIN THEN I WOULD HAVE LINGERING PAIN IN THE JAW AND THE SIDE OF MY FACE -EXACTLY IN THE DISTRIBUTION OF THE TRIGEMINAL NERVE.

HAVE I BEEN TO SEE THE DENTIST? NOOOOOOOO.  AS AFRAID AS SOMEBODY ELSE IS OF A CLOSED MRI OR AN LP, THAT'S THEY WAY I AM ABOUT THE DENTIST.  BUT, NOW WHEN I HAVE THE PAIN IN THAT TOOTH, AFTERWARDS I FEEL IT IN 4 TEETH, TWO UPPER MOLARS AND 2 LOWER, IN MY JAW AND REALLY SEVERE RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE EAR.

I AM CONVINCED IT IS SOME WEIRD FORM OF TN.  I KNOW I SHOULD GO TO THE DNETIST, BUT I REALLY DON'T HAVE THE MONEY FOR THAT, AND PRESENTS AND FOR MY SWEET BABY ABBY (CAT) WHO IS DWINDLING AWAY WITH RENAL FAILURE.

IF IT WERE A ROTTEN TOOTH I WOULD THINK SOMETHING WOULD HAVE SHOWN BY NOW.  THERE IS NO TENDERNESS IN THE GUM AND ONE OF THE UPPER TEETH THAT HURTS ISN'T EVEN A TOOTH ANYMORE, IT'S A 15 YEAR OLD ROOT CANAL.

PLEASE, EVERYBODY TELL ME I DON'T NEED TO SEE THE DENTIST!  I WAS BORN WITH WONKY TEETH.  I'M CONGENITALLY MISSING 13 OF MY ADULT TEETH SO THE ONES I HAD GREW IN ALL OVER MY MOUTH, INCLUDING FROM THE MIDDLE OF THE ROOF OF MY MOUTH.  I WAS IN ORTHODONTIA (WHO WAS A SADIST) FOR MANY YEARS.  HE USED TO PUT EVERY INSTRUMENT IN THE OFFICE IN MY MOUTH AND THEN SING CRA*PY SONGS TO ME OFF KEY!

I HATE THE DENTIST.  SO SUE ME!  HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO YOU ALL, TOO!  I HATE THE DENTIST!

quix (did i tell you i hate going to the dentist?)

EARLY LAST YEAR I WENT THROUGH A BIG SO-CALLED DENTAL PROBLEM, OR AT LEAST THAT'S WHAT I THOUGHT. HAD A LOT OF PAIN IN MY JAW AND THE DENTIST DIAGNOSED TMJ DISORDER (THE JOINT HINGE OF THE JAW). HE MADE ME A MOUTH GUARD TO WEAR, WHICH COST ME $300. WELL, WHEN THE DUST SETTLED AND THAT BOUT OF SYMPTOMS WENT AWAY, SO DID THE JAW PAIN. I DIDN'T HAVE THAT DISORDER AT ALL, THOUGH I STILL HAVE THE @^%&% MOUTH GUARD. OH WELL, C'EST LA VIE.

Hi, I am so glad you asked this question, as I also called my dentist because of pain in my teeth.  I had a feeling it wasn't from a dental problem and it wasn't.  I all of the sudden  had throbbing pain in about 4 teeth and my right side jaw, and then it went away in about 3 or 4 days.  I think it must be related to MS.
Happy holidays, Terrie

Hi,
I READ IN A POST AWHILE AGO THAT YOU NEEDED LARGE CAPS .. SOMETHING TO DO WITH EYESIGHT ?  MINE IS WONKY..  LOVE THAT EXPRESSION

SL MADE A GOOD SUGGESTION TO TRY THE TOOTH PASTE FOR SENSITIVE TEETH.

IN JUNE I PRESENTED WITH TRYGEMINAL NEUROPATHY , BUZZING AND NUMBNESS IN MY FACE   IT SOON PROGRESSED INTO PAIN IN MY MOUTH AND TEETH     I SAW A DENTIST   HAD A FULL WORK UP WITH CT SCAN   EVERYTHING WAS FINE     THE PAIN DID ABATE AFTER ABOUT A MONTH ... NOW IT COMES AND GOES IN DIFFERENT TEETH  AND DOESN'T LAST LONG   NOT TOO BAD      SO I JUST TELL MYSELF  ' ITS SENSORY'

ITS STRANGE THAT I HAD A GOOD PERSPECTIVE ON THE TOOTH PAIN (AND EVERYTHING ELSE)  BUT THIS WEEKEND HAD REALLY BAD ELECTRICAL PAIN IN MY HANDS AND WAS SORT OF IN A PANIC    I'M MUCH BETTER NOW BECAUSE OF SOME HELP FROM THE FORUM ..    IT WORKS!!!

HAVE A GREAT TIME AT THE CONCERT     DON'T GET TOO WARN OUT SINGING

JO

P.S.  HAPPY HOLIDAYS

Hey KIT,

I'M SO SORRY TO NOT HAVE ANYTHING TO SAY TO HELP WITH THIS.  I THINK MOST WOULD HAVE RESPONDED, HAD WE HAD A CLUE THAT IT WAS THE MS, OR SOMETHING ELSE.

THE PINS AND NEEDLES, JUST STINK!!!!!!!!!!!!  COMING AND GOING AS THEY DURN WELL PLEASE ALL THE TIME!!!!!  IT'S JUST A BUNCH OF BULL ISN'T IT.

WELL, I HOPE IT'S SUBSIDED FOR YOU, AND I HOPE IT DOESN'T COME BACK.

I'M GLAD YOU WENT TO THE DENTIST THOUGH, AT LEAST YOU CAN RULE THAT OUT.  I KNOW MY NERVES GET A BIT NUTS IN THERE WHEN I USE THE WHITENING TOOTH PASTE FOR TOO LONG.

I SWITCH IT OFF TO REGULAR ON OCCASSION WHEN I START HAVING PROBS.  MAYBE GET SOME OF THE SENSITIVE KIND TO USE ONCE IN AWHILE, THAT MAY HELP.

HOPE YOU ARE WELL!!!!!

ttys,
SL
