I am not DX, just told me it sounded like I had an MS attack and I'm seeing him friday to discuss mri? or what, haha
but, take this for what it's worth because i do have muscle weakness on my left side and a new mild scoliosis, but my left ribs feel compressed and i can't get away from it...it feels like a band horizontally at the bottom half of left ribs, but also it feels like vertical compression which is why i always assumed scoliosis was the cause.
truth is i don't know what it is, the scoliosis does not see bad, and i've heard 2 theories so far, that a hip misalignment caused the scoliosis or that the muscle weakness allowed for it and pulled my hip with the curving spine, lol...love it
but anyway this has been since at least christmas, off and on but primarily on, maybe if i had to guess(no formal tracking) it's been 75% of the time hurting, with some days or some half days where it's okay...it's not sharp but it is the most intense ache/pressure and it legitamately hurts in it's own way, almost in a worse way than the pinch lumbosacral nerve pain i experienced after a PT mishap allignment, that pain felt like back labor, dull sharp and it was easier to deal with than this ache
so i can't say whether what im experiencing is an ms hug but after the doc said he thought my major flare oon the 14th was MS, i started going "uh huh!!!" light bulb..
all that aside...i really hope you feel better...i know heat can be problmeatic, last night i thought a hot bath would help, and felt like i was goign to pass out from dizziness, then did a search and realized oooops, not the best :) however advil/half a vicodin, (I can't take too much or i get sick) and a heat pad on the one spot on my ribs has helped a little at least in relaxing me and lying flat on a memory foam mattress has help a little, sittign is probably the worst for me, then standing hurts, so stomach or back lying has been the most successful of my choices
hope you feel better, praying for some relief for you!

yikes paula,
well, it sounds awful familiar to me, i've had my lt. ribs feel like that for 5-6 weeks at a time, though not painful--just the pressure. do you remember what braxton hicks feel like? and i understand the ball under the ribs feeling you described too...could well have been the ms. hug. so glad it didn't last long.
i've read if you try and relax when it first begins that it passes more quickly for some people.
hope today is better!!
xo
Red, no you didn't scare me. It is just nice to know for future reference.
JJ,
I had my gallbladder out in 2004. It is very painful. Almost as bad as being in labor. So I know it wasn't my gallbladder. But thanks for looking out.
Paula
Hey Paula,
I dont know if you should assume it is the MS hug because there are other things that can cause the type of pain you've described, even indigestion from high fat foods. As soon as i started reading your post I had gallbladder pop in my head, mainly because you described right side pain, a huge ball feeling under your ribs and you'd eaten a high fat content food not long before. A Gallbladder attack can also make you feel like your over heating but it is from a low grade fever and even make it difficult to breath, its rather painful!
My mum has reflux and often put this type of pain down to that, but she ended up in the ER and having her Gallbladder out. I even thought I might have gallbladder probs when i first had intercostal muscle spasms, but you could see the left side, front to back of my rib cage contract through each spasm so it didn't take long to work out it wasn't. Anyway i found this basic stuff on Gallbladder issues.
--------------------
Gallbladder pain is usually a sudden, intense pain that lasts from 30 minutes to 2 hours. You'll feel it the middle or upper right of the abdomen. It may start in the front, and then go to the back or right shoulder blade area. Once the initial attack is over, there may be soreness in the upper abdomen that lasts from 24 to 48 hours. Gallbladder symptoms usually occur an hour or so after eating.

I found lots describing exactly what you have, and its always worth checking out just in case it is not the Hug, somethings you can prevent or aide but the Hug isn't something you can do much about because its cause is a spinal lesion, not much you can do about that.
Food for thought!
Cheers.........JJ
Hi Paula, I hope I didn't scare you. I hate this d___ disease! Red
Red,
Thank you for the advice. It kinda scared me, thought it might be my liver, but then I remember people on here talking about it before and decided that must be what is going on. I didn't know however, that it can cause breathing difficulties. Thanks for the info.
Michelle,
Thank you, I am glad it didn't last too long as well..hope it never happens again.
Paula
Hi Paula,
Yes that sounds like the MS hug to me as well. Glad it didnt last too long...
Michelle
Hi Paula,
It really does sound like the MS Hug. These things can happen anytime anywhere.
The hug happens differently in everyone, the only thing that's the same is that it really hurts. I can last for 1 minute to 1 day. If you ever feel like you can't breathe--- let someone know becuase it can do damage.
Sorry that you had to be introduced to that during a fun time!
xxxxoooo
