I also am looking to donate my kidney to my son. He has a rare autoimmune disease called Glomerulonephritis. Normally individuals with either Diabetes or Lupus get it. My son has neither. He will either need to go on long-term dialysis or have a kidney transplant. I was reassured by reading that "According to Alberta Health Services, organ and tissue donation is still an option for patients with MS."
There are a bunch of people here, including myself, who will be hoping that the match is positive and you can be a donor for your wife. Good luck and keep us posted, ok?
Congratulations! It is truly a wonderful thing you are doing. My sister received a kidney transplant 15 years ago and It truly saved her life. She feels very blessed. I have registered with my state to be on organ donor when I die (which hopefully won't be for a long time)! It never even occurred to me to wonder if they can use my organs due to my MS.
I wish you the best of luck :)
Cheers,
Deb
that is WONDERFUL...
we wish the best to both of you.............
take care

Met with the Kidney Transplant Team for and evaluation;
I have been approved to be a paired donor pending an appointment with a urologist. The team just wants to make sure that there are no issues between my bladder and kidneys.
:)
I know a person with MS who gave a kidney and has been on Tysabri for many years with one kidney. I think he gave his kidney before diagnosis. He is still working and doing well.

Hi Sho, that's funny that MS folks can't give blood in the UK because that restriction in the US was lifted a few years ago. I have given blood since my dx of MS.
Ridiculous is what it is.
In the UK, it appears that you probably could
"Although people with multiple sclerosis can't give blood or donate bone marrow, the donation of organs is allowed. The reasoning is that the recipients of organs can be told about the donor and are in a position to accept any associated risks."
http://www.mstrust.org.uk/atoz/organ.jsp
Also
"Can I be a donor if I have an existing medical condition?
"Yes, in most circumstances. Having a medical condition does not necessarily prevent a person from becoming an organ or tissue donor. The decision about whether some or all organs or tissue are suitable for transplant is made by a healthcare professional, taking into account your medical history.
"There are only two conditions where organ donation is ruled out completely. A person cannot become an organ or tissue donor if they have been diagnosed with HIV or have, or are suspected of having, CJD."

You really need to talk to someone with expertise in this area, though.

I don't believe it is doable, and I am so sorry it is that way. I know you and your wife have struggled for quite some time.

By pure coincidence, I recently read this on the Rocky Mtn. MS Center website:
"What if one has already willed one's body for transplantation?
Since a virus may cause MS, we do not recommend that eyes, kidneys, or other organs be donated for transplantation. "
http://www.mscenter.org/research/tissue-bank/7/
I don't know if that is the standard position on the matter or just theirs.
sorry typo I meant, I commend you.
WOW,
I don't really know, however I commend, family and health is the greatest gift we have on this earth, I do once a donor kidney is implanted the recipient immediately starts to improve.
I wish you the best.

Seems the rules are different everywhere.
