MS and Carpel Tunnel

Hello.
I was Dx with MS in June 07. After 2 weeks in hospital had great recovery, feel good etc, etc. Last month my hands and feet started feeling numb. Went to neuro, did nerve conduction and said I had severe carpel tunnel in right hand. Wants me to have surgery right away. I tend to be cautious by nature and never jump in to things. I asked him how he knew it was not from the MS and he convinced me with test results why. Anywho, my ? is has anyone had the carpel tunnel surgery and did it help. I know my feet will still be numb :) but the Dr was concernerd with me loosing my hand permanently.

Thank You

Heather is correct.  CTS is very common and it occurs in people with MS, but no more commonly than in other people.  Sometimes having CTS will confuse the issue when someone is trying to get a diagnosis, but the two things are not related.

I have had Carpal Tunnel Release on both hands.  It relieved my pain instantly.  Now over 15 years later, I have what is called Flexor Tenosynovitis and was told that it is common in people that have or have had Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.  CTS is NOT the cause of my current problem in my hands.

The only complaint I had after the surgery, is that holding anything cold hurt my hands.  I was told that because the tendon was cut to relieve the Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, that the nerves to the wrist and palm are very near the surface making it more sensitive.

The only last comment I can mention is I wondered after the surgery, why I waited so long to have it done.  The pain relief was nothing but miraculous.

I also have MS and CTS is no greater in those with MS, than in the general popluation.
