MS and rare hypersexuality/libido

Hi all,

It has been a while since I've posted and I hope everybody is doing well.

Since the onset of my MS almost 10 years ago, I have always had (decreased libido) due to lack of sensation, etc.

My new and recent problem is hypersexuality and libido, and I am wondering if this could be a sign of NEW LESIONS in my frontal and parietal lobes?

I did find a few articles online, but states that it is rare.

This is all-in-all actually a new thing for me altogether and slightly embarrassing.  My husband does not know what to think....LOL

Anyway, if anybody might have knowledge of this or some insight, I would be greatly appreciative....

Your libido could have something to do with MS, but I don’t think that symptom alone would dictate your course of MS treatment. It warrants mentioning to your doctor, however, because it could be indicative of something else. Doctors and their assistants (such as my wife) have seen and heard it all (especially here in Oregon), and they’re not going to think lesser of you. They also wouldn’t make comments like “your husband’s a lucky guy,” but they might seem to minimize it because as MS patients we sometimes need to pick our battles; fatigue, speaking issues, and weakness that you report might be a greater concern.

Don’t feel “TERRIBLE” or anywhere close about these things you’ve done … like the medical professionals, people here are not going to judge you. You probably haven’t harmed yourself or anyone else. You comment that you’re religious, and perhaps that means church-going, and your congregration shouldn’t be judging you either, not that they’d ever know.

Thanks for the advice.  I have had many symptoms over the years...
Dizzy loss of balance
Hyperacusis
Nystagmus
Horrendous fatigue
And difficulty speaking

Right now most of my symptoms have abated except for the fatigue...it's a lot better now though, and minor speaking issues when I'm very tired and weakness on left side

You don't mention any other symptoms. If this is the only symptom, it is pretty unlikely to be MS related.

I second the advice JJ has given you but would like to add that I don't think your doctor won't believe, or take you seriously.  Increased libido can be a warning sign of a number of diseases, some of them related to your adrenals, among other things.  A blood test at the very least would be the minimum you should accept from your PCP, in my opinion.

I honestly don't think you should be at all concerned about MS, if your issue is dealing with an increased sex drive and related behavioural changes and no other associated symptom of MS. Whilst sexual issue are associated with MS, it's actually more common for someone with MS to experience a decreased sex drive, loss of sensation etc

I strongly recommend you do speak to your doctor, there could be a medical (eg hormonal) explanation for these significant changes in sexual behaviours and it's definitely in your best interest to seek help! If you are genuinely too embarrassed to see your family doctor, you may feel more comfortable getting the opinion of a psychologist first.....

I am having the same problem!  I feel like I'm going crazy.  I am happily married and have a great sex life but for the last 3 months my drive has been supersonic.  I'm also doing things I NEVER  do like watch hard porn, masterbate, and go on sex chat sites.  This is not something I've ever done before and I'm very religious so I feel TERRIBLE!  I don't want to talk to a dr about it because 1 it's embarrassing 2 he won't believe me or take it seriously 3 he will minimize it and say my husbands a lucky guy.  I have also read some articles.  Could it be MS?

I don't know much (ok, at this point next to nothing), but to me, it stands to reason that if you can have decreased libido, why can't it also cause increased libido?  I know it would be a delicate thing to mention, yet I do hope you ask because I am now curious. Couldn't there be pleasant symptoms/sensations, or at least some other than bad ones?

I hope you took great advantage of that six weeks! ;)

Hi all,

As a follow up to my original post, my increased libido only lasted about 6 weeks.

I am now under the assumption that this was a "relapse" of my MS because of the duration.  I must have had some lesions pop up in that area of the brain.

I am going to make my 6 month followup with neurologist within the next month and will say something to him, although I feel kind of ridiculous saying it....

I would definately talk to your dr. about this but sexuality also improves overall health and well-being so studies say.  I hope it does this for you atleast for a little while!

As to what it is about MS and springtime. Maybe you have some allergies that are ramping up your immune system?

I definitely feel that this just might be another symptom, since it is spring and usually I get something happening this time of the year.  I do not know what it is about springtime, but I can actually feel the MS rearing its ugly head.  

Thanks again for taking the time to respond.  I, too, have increased or heightened sensation, which is not normal for me.

That is strange, but I have experienced something similar.  Well, maybe.  I started having myoclonic jerks of the torso, but they went along with an increased libido and increased sensitivity.  I didn't like the myoclonus, but the rest was great.  That lasted about three months.

This has been going on about 2 weeks, which I guess is a short time, but is very frustrating.

I did post a question to a neurologist here online, so will see what I can find out.

I looked it up online, too, and the case I read about definitely sounded like too much of a good thing! I hope things settle down for you soon to a happy medium.

Lucky hubby. All I could think about was my husband saying "he wishes"...LOL.

I sure hope you don't have new lesions but I guess this could be one "good" MS symptom.

I totally agree with everything you said.  Nothing shocks me about this disease, but this has been absolutely crazy and not me at all.

I am 50 years old this year and this is so not me.  My MS started 10 years ago.  I even have had a hysterectomy in 1996.

My normal is a non-libido and now it is rampant.....

This is one place where you shouldn't feel embarrassed to talk about anything. We are all aware that because MS attacks the central nervous system it can affect anything and everything. Nothing should come as a shock to anyone here and there's a better than even chance what you describe has happened to at least one of us :-)
