MS versus Red Wine

I went out last night and had one to many drinks.  My eyes started to drive me crazy.  Couldn't focus on anything,  double vision,  felt like to much pressure right behind my eyes. I am guessing MS and fine red wine don't exactly mix?   On the plus side waking up this morning my eyes feel a little sore but that's it, but vision is good.

I've found that drinking alcohol causes me to have a relapse. I stop drinking completely, and i drank beer from age 15 to 42.

I don't have a problem with red wine, but I do have a problem if I drink too much.  More than three pints of beer, and I feel like I'm having a relapse the next day.

I do fine with ONE glass of wine with my dinner.  Very occasionally I'll have un digestif: Calvados, a good single malt scotch, Cognac...Just a tad...

Anything more than ONE glass of wine with dinner gives me the ol' rebound at about 3:30 am, and I'm wide awake!

I drink a glass of red wine a few times a week, maybe the odd cognac or calvados, and only rarely will I overdo it as I do not bounce back from hangovers like I did when I was 19.  This is an age related issue, not MS related!  I have a history of vision problems due to MS: a short, painful bout of ON with no permanent vision loss, and severe, year long double vision.  Drinking alcohol doesn't seem to cause any vision issues for me, though as Lulu's story points out, maybe I'm too intoxicated to care, lol.  

Drinking, red wine in particular, really makes my face hot and flushed, even after a few sips.  This seems to be a side effect of meds: amitriptyline and possibly Lyrica may be the offenders.  This never happened to me prior to starting those meds.

I generally don't drink because of my poor balance, but this summer we went to my fav place for margueritas and I had a BIG one.  I din't feel to bad, but my vision became wavery like I was looking across the source of heat and you could see the heat waves rising.  This lasted about a hour and I wondered if it was the alcohol or the very hot day that prompted my desire for it.

Your experience makes me think of a comment I read from an MS neuro - I forget where I saw this though...

he had a patient write that drinking beer always improved the patient's balance and ability to walk straight and seemed to quiet the symptoms. So they actually did a small study about MS and alcohol.  With testing, they found that is not true, the symptoms acutally get worse, it's just the  patient doesn't notice and doesn't care! :-)


Red wine and I don't mix at all - even before I went on my MS drugs.  It leaves me feeling like my eyes are coming out of my head, and usually a headache too.
