Muscle Biopsy

I posted a question earlier regarding my MRI which had nonspecific foci of high T2.  My neurologist wanted to do more test and did a nerve biopsy to rule out peripheral neuropathy.  I totally was expecting it to come back positive due to my numbness, tingling, loss of balance and pain.  Not to mention the RLS and horrible itching under my skin in my feet and hands.  My biopsy came back normal.  Does anyone know if you can have a normal nerve biopsy with MS?

I recently went on a short trip to Las Vegas.  It was warm there and I could hardly make it back to the hotel.  I know something is just not right.

Your doc was just testing for peripheral neuropathy.  I can't explain all the technical end of all this, but with a negative test he got the answer he was looking for.  He ruled out peripheral neuropathy...not MS.  The test says that peripheral neuropathy is not the cause of your symptoms.

Hope this helps,
Addi

MS is a disease of the brain and spinal cord...the Central Nervous System.  If you have peripheral nerve disease, it helps move the diagnosis away from MS and more towards peripheral neuropathy.  If the peripheral nerve biopsy is normal and the EMG is normal then things start looking more like the CNS.  It is one of the many signs they can use to rule stuff out.

In the end, MS is a diagnosis of exclusion.  Rule out everything else and MS is left.

Ha ha!  I was hoping Bob would pipe in here!  He always explains it just right.  That's the technical end I was talking about.  Thanks, Bob!  :)

Thanks for your input.  Even though I do not have a dx yet, this is a great forum to vent.  Love the people here.

Does anyone notice that their symptoms are exacerbated in the afternoon or evening.  Or if it is warm outside?  I am usually pretty good until about noon, then everything really kicks in.

Hi. If you're new here, welcome.

It's very common, to the point of being almost standard in MS, to be worse as we get tired, which happens all too soon. Also, heat intolerance is another, almost standard, MS complaint.

Please take a look at our Health Pages, by clicking the 'button' at the far upper right. You'll find a wealth of useful info.
