I'd wrap them in red tape of some sort, if putting in the trash
I use to put mine in milk jugs or water jugs and tape the lids on and put them in the trash. That is what I was told to do.

I get them from Wal Mart but people use things like bleach bottles, you want sturdy plastic that the needles won't puncture. I still wouldn't put them in the general trash. You might check with the hospitals or pharmacies to see if there is someplace that takes them.
Shared Solutions or my specialty pharmacy used to send me these upon request.
However, there are easier ways. Just save an old screw-top soda bottle and use that. When it's full, dispose of it in accordance with your local laws. But if there is no feasible way, the plastic bottle with the top screwed on tightly is perfectly safe for the general trash.
