Neuro-psych

Couple of you mentioned neuro-psych testing (or results thereof) in your "What I'm doing this week" posts.  I'm supposed to see one of those guys; any common denominator you can share, just so I have a clue what to expect?  Well, first I expect them to call and tell me when, I suppose.  Maybe I should call them; nobody else seems to have the sense of urgency that I feel when it comes to my medical mysteries.

This is my post on my neuropsych.  The testing took 5 and a half hours.  In the long run the info has been helpful to me.  Just do your best and don't worry about it.  I have discovered it is what it is.

I just got the results bakc form my neuro-pysch testing today. They told mne the testing involves the initial visit with the psychologist to determine what areas need to be tested. My main concerns were memory and losing the inability to multi-task efficiently.

My testing only took 2 1/2 hours. It was extremely frustrating to me. I thought I was a complete idiot when I walked out of the place. The test memory and recall several different ways, i.e. lisitng a bunch of words and then asking you to repeat as many as you can. Then later during the testing, they ask you to repeat as many as you can after they've administered a couple of other tests. Another test is repatinga series of nubers or numbers and letters and categorizing them numerically and alphabetically in mentally before repeating them.

My neuro told me the full set of testing is 8 hours like Jen but he feels that is too long at one time. His thought was that you get too tired to perform to your true potential but then it does simulate the real world then.

Anyway, my results surprised me and I actually did quite well. I do have problems with retrival of information-no problem getting info  into the brain but issues with getting it  back out in a timed situation.

At least I have a baseline to go from now if I start to notice more of a decline. The reason I was concerned was that my co-workers noticed I was forgetting things . But, once upon a time ,I did have a true photographic memory and could tell you where on the page a specific paragraph or topic was. That is what I miss, so since I was orginally blessed with an excellent memory I notice the deficits . The test results are compared against standardized norms for your initial test. Subsequent testing can then be used to compare and show a further decline.

My testing did not include a specific IQ test but two areas were tested as a "hold" test  (sorry just quoting the report -can't explain the "hold" comment) but it was used as a general indicator of my IQ.

Hope this helps.

I have an appt with a neuro-psych next month.  Basically they will give you an IQ test and run some other assessments to find out your strengths and weaknesses.  The assessments are very expensive and it can take some time to get the results as they write up a full report going over everything in detail.  They also take a few hours to complete.

I'm not looking forward to mine, as I know I have some issues.

They'll sit you down first and do an evaluation - why you think you need a neuro-psych, etc.  The test itself will take up to eight hours.  Mine was six, with a break in the middle.  It's a full-on test - whatever is wrong with you, they'll find it!
