Night-time blindness

Hello to everyone,

It's been a while since I've visited the forum.  I hope someone can give me some input.

I've been having what my Neuro refered to as nighttime blindness.  When I'm going to bed at night and turn off the light it takes about 5 minutes for my eyes to adjust to the darkness.  So there I am staring at blackness.  The first time it happened it took about 5 minutes for my sight to start coming back and about 15 minutes to  get fully focused.  When I got up and turned on the light my eyes hurt, I was quite dizzy and nauseated.  It's happened four times but last night my vision came back quickly.  I notice that when my vision is coming back I can see things to the sides but when I turn to focus on them they disappear.  So I'm guessing my main problem is my central vision.

In December I was seen by an Opthamologist (refered by ny neuro) because of vision issues.  Everything OK.  I've had a MRI of the optic nerve with contrast and nothing has been found.  My neuro recognizes that it still is MS related but said that nighttime blindness can be a result of Vit. A deficiency which I don't believe I am.

Has anyone had this happen?  Should something else be done or does this go down as yet another of the weird vision problems one gets with MS.

So good to see you again!

I have not had night blindness to that extent, but I see much more poorly in the dark now then before.  I have nightlights permanently on in every room, but is for balance.  I depend on my vision for balance and simply fall over if there is no light.  I don't even know that I am falling until I hit something.

I would recommend trying not to go from extremes of light and dark.

I agree that this is likely MS-related.

Welcome back!
