My best friend had to have a fine needle biopsy, and she also said she couldn't even feel it. She has the best endocrinologist in the world.
Her biopsy showed cancer, and she had to have her thyroid removed. She recovered quickly, no radiation, and it is several years later and she is doing great as far as no return of cancer.
I know that your biopsy will be smooth, and pray that it will show benign results. If not, as Jules said, this would be a slow growing cancer and easy to stop at an early stage. My friend rarely thinks about it, just takes her thyroid hormones.
I'm sorry about the losses you've suffered recently. I lost my dad a few years back, esophageal cancer. He was so peaceful, going, that I lost any lingering fear of death.
Dec. 1 isn't far away; I don't see my neuro for another 5 months; I'll have a list of stuff for her, as well as results from other specialists. I go for a nerve conduction study tomorrow, and Friday I go for urodynamic testing.
I had a Lumbar puncture a few months back, and everything was pretty normal. I was one of the unlucky that got a spinal headache, so I would suggest you do what everyone will tell you; stay flat for at least 24 hours afterwards, only getting up to go potty and eat. Drink lots of liquid, and if you tolerate caffeine, include that, too.
I'm rambling on, sorry, don't know you well enough to know if this is your first LP! I'm just getting used to Provigil, and tend to run off at the mouth or computer keyboard.
:o)
Take care,
Kathy
Thanks so much for all the nodule knowledge. I am to have the biopsy on the 24th. It is very worry some with someone sticking a needle in your neck. It is hard to get that picture out of your head! hehehehe. I have had alot going on this year! My dad passed away this year and my sister inlaw passed away also and I just lost a cousin that was only 45 years old. She had lupus for years and also alot of other health issues we did not know about. So much health problems. I got my flu and pneumonia shots and the nurse gave it to me in the same arm and it caused cellulitis in my arm and that was over a month ago and you can still see the place and it still itches. I dont see my neuro until 12-1-08 and it will be 6 months since I last saw him. I think I will see if he will give me a Lumbar Puncture to see if anything shows up!

I am dx'ed with hypothyroidism and taking synthroid. I too have a nodule on my thyroid. This is measured every year to monitor changes. I have also had a biopsy. It was very simple. I was given a prescription for a cream to put on my neck about an hour before the procedure. That was to numb the area. I had to cover the area with saran wrap. Fortunately it was winter time so I didn't look like a complete fool ! :-) Then an imaging device is used to guide the needle to take a biopsy. There was no pain. My endocrinoligist is excellent and explained the whole process.
I worried myself more than necessary. (OK, I'm a worrywart by birth.) The nodule has been on my thyroid since I was first dx in 2000. Due to some other unique features for me, my endocrinologist said there was a remote possibility of cancer so he has carefully monitored me over the years. He also emphasied that thyroid cancer in the majority of cases is a very slow growing cancer with a high survival rate and that if you had to be dx'ed with a cancer, this is the one to have.
I literally worried myself sick. All for nothing. The biopsy was benign. My endo continues to monitor the nodule.
A close friend also had a nodule biopsy in the last few months. Hers was also benign. I told her what I have told you. She, like me is a worrywart. She didn't listen to anything I said. Then after the procedure she said - Oh, it was no big deal, no pain, very simple and hers too was benign.
I hope you have the same positive experience that we have had. Cheers, Jules
Hey Lynette,
Nice to see you. I don't know much about the nodules either, only that they have to be a certain size in order for them to biopsy them. So, I'm thinking it's a good thing they are going to do this for you.
When are you lined up for this? Soon? Are you worried? You've been through a lot. We've got so many new members, if you are up to it, please re-cap for those who don't know you. Did you get dx'd w/PAD? Am I remembering correctly?
I found out this year I had nodules on my thyroid, and in some strange places too, but they were not big enough to biopsy. I know the Rebif can cause thyroid changes (which I totally thought was happening), but unfortunately, I will never know if I had them before starting the meds. Nothing showed in my bloodwork ref. the thyroid levels, only the ultrasound.
For me, they will just watch them.
Hopefully some of our more versed thyroid experts will see this and shed some light on the subject.
See you around Nette. Don't be such a stranger,

Do you have any thyroid problems? Was it a tumor, or just a nodule? Do you know if you have goiter(enlarged thyroid)?
My Mom went to school with a guy that ended up an endocrinologist. Whilst trying to find out why I was so fatigued a few years ago, I ended up at his office and discovered I had goiter. They went ahead and gave me an ultrasound, and I have several nodules on my thyroid. My bloodwork was normal though, and my Mom's doctor friend said a biopsy wasn't necessary and that they were probably harmless. I had them ultrasounded a year later, they didn't change-and my bloodwork was still pretty normal. He gave me some synthroid to shrink the goiter and it worked.
Is your allergy guy an endo? If not, maybe you should see one before a biopsy.
Good luck!
