Numb pacth that size of a dinner plate?

uk2
Hi ALL

I've not been on here a while hope you all ok?

Most might not know me been ill since 2007 all sorts of sx from vertigo to painful nerve type pain and weakness in legs, had one set of MRI in 2007 nothing appeared, had brain and neck done again 2 weeks ago pick up results next week ( i am uk and nhs remember).

My neuro feels its not MS and says if nothing appears this time he will again discharge me my dr is now thinking its not a general neurology problem at all and thinks its more neuromuscular so another referal to a london hospital the best in its filed but i feel maybe the wrong field for me??

question- i have a numb patch that started as a thumb size patch on my hip it has spread round to my bum and is as large as a dinner plate now, the odd thing is around the edges it hurts to lay on almost though it is going numb or wanting to stop being numb, its the only tangible thing i have to show there is something wrong as my neuro is sure this is all in my head surly i cant tell my nerves to stop feeling can i??he sure thinks all the pain is in my head i can stick a pin in it and i cant feel it yet i can feel its numb when walking maybe this is my clothes rubbing it.

If this is not MS what eles can make this happen in these areas i was once given a dx of fibro but since they have said no to this but could fibromyalgia cause this? and when they look at the MRI scan again not done with MS protocal and no contrast used though requested. Can you get numb patches in neuromuscular disorders??

Any advise would be great

sam

Thank you i have asked a lots of fibro patients and all say they get numb feelings but they never last long this is been 2 mths and growing and i know its not fibro, i was discharged from my neuro today he thinks it is fibro if that exsist his team think not but wont tell me what it is but as pain is the most sx then its a pain condition he would not even look at the numb patch even though its new over the last 2 mths!! thank goodness i have another referal to another hospital far from him and hopefully this time i will get a 2 nd opinion and they will treat me as a new patient.

How are you getting on with everything what do they feel is happening with your arm?

I've had Fibro for 9 yrs. it does not cause numb spots, but it does let you feel/notice it more. my right forearm went numb in march '09. as weird as it sounds I prefer it stay that way, any time it wakes up I feel electrical, sharp, stinging, tearing or stabbing pain, or tingling, or extremely itchy. my PC agreed with me what ever is going on in my arm is NOT fibro.

My patch on my back lasted about 6 months but it did go away. I also had a problem with my legs last year which was the first time ever, this wad at it's worst for about 10 weeks but I still can't walk as well as before this incident. It was put down to a physical problem at the time but we now know it was more likely neurological as my description rang bells with the neuro and the ortho agreed.

However, my spine mri, like your, was done in a mobile unit on an old 1.5T machine and the neuro told me over the phone that it was normal - that did not surprise me given the difficulties and the timescales.

From what I understand from others here we are 'lucky' if the sx and mri match as that makes the dx easier for the neuro.

I am afraid I know nothing about the other problems you have but others around here do and hopefully they will chip in.

Pat

Thanks for replying if it is MS Sx does it not sure as a lesion on the MRI?? or is it what they call a clinical lesion one observed but not seen on the MRI?? i guess its just nerves misbehaving again which we just dont understand, i guess my neruo will tell me its all in my head again!! but the last lumber MRI i had back in 2007 showed bulging disk at L4/5 and worst at S1 i wonder if they have gotten worst?? i asked others on the fibro site if they ever get long lasting numb patches and they dont they get on and off numb patches with tingling but not ones that last for days, weeks or mths so it has to be something other then fibro.

I have had a numb patch which grew to the size of a "dessert plate" on my butt. It lasted for quite a long time, and I did have a lumber MRI. The MRI was basically normal, and it was chalked up to yet another benefit of MS for me.  It was very disconcerting, but has since gone away.

I hope your goes away soon too...Perhaps you can get a lumbar MRI? I was told sometimes herniated discs in the lower back can cause numbness, so that is why my doc referred me.

Good luck to you,
Michelle

Thanks for replying,if yours went away maybe mine will too its so odd to have a growing numb patch yet not had an injury there or surgey which on looking at the internet are the most common reasons and next is the brain not receiving the signals or none being sent out by the brain so the nerves stop doing there job and lost of feeling occurs.

Hi how are you?? great to here from you. Yes i go back wed i dont hold much hope but to be discharged but i have not told him of this new symptom as he was so off hand when i saw him a mth ago when i told him about my vertigo he said "we will do another brain MRI but it wont show anything new i doubt" i wish he had done the lower spine as well as something must be a miss when you get numb patches but i guess he will say its all in my mind again! He did do the top of the neck maybe he will see something but i bet he wont and will be all smug looking when i go back.

Hi Sam,

I have noticed your absense and I'm glad you've come back.  In MS it's the demyelination that is at the root of these issues, but I really don't know anything about neuro muscular disorders.

Is your appt. next week to go over the MRI results?

As you know I had a similar sized patch on my back for about 6 months last year. It was on the right hand side emanating from my spine outwards and included shock / tingling type feelings too.

I could not sit back in a chair or lie on it as it was very uncomfortable (bordering on pain) and yet was numb.

Not sure what it was, I just chalked it up as another of those strange feelings, but I did tell the neuro about it.
