OT Mary Mary quite contrary How does your garden grow

After just coming back in from my garden I thought I would start this thread just for fun.

In my case it is a mixed bag...

For the most part all of my cool weather plants didn't make it, died, or are just doing poorly. I think this is mainly due to the fact it turn HOT toot SOON around here. But I am holding out for maybe some fall crops.

Spinach, lettuce ( both types), onions (both types) and carrots bought it pretty much right away. My radishes  are still growing, but for the most part are not producing any bulbs. I tried one of the few radishes that did bulb up and it was hotter than the hottest sauce you can get to put on a taco.

My Cantaloupe are going crazy.  I only planted 3 mounds but they have just about taken over one of my entire raised bed garden ( I have 3 of them).  Initially they grew to over 2 feet tall, but now are covering an area of around 6 foot by 5 foot. None of my peppers ( 2 types)  have grown that much and have only seen a few blossoms on one of them. My tomatoes started out pretty slowly but are finally starting to bare fruit. I have about a dozen cherries getting pretty good in size and should turn red in a week, My big boy's are also starting to produce and are starting to pull the plants over. Have to remember to tie them up tomorrow while I am out there.

My pole beans are another plant that has gone crazy. I only planted a 4 x 4 area with them but have a million beans popping out everywhere on them. As are my broccoli and cauliflower at least as far a growth is concerned. Being cool weather plants they never produced any flowers. In the area of squashes I have not had much luck this year so far. My summer, acorn, and eggplant didn't sprout at all..Not sure why that is. My butternut. and winter are growing but have not seen any flowers on them at all. My watermelon is also going slow and has just started to send off shoots.  That brings me to the corn which is doing really great. It is about 4 1/2 feet tall, has tassels are the start of cobs showing.

All that is left for my garden is my fruit. I have 2 separate raised beds for them 1 is for 3 blueberry bushes and they look nice and healthy. This is there first years so no fruit allow. The other bed had my strawberries. I have already had 2 crops off of them....Oh so sweet and juicy. Wish I had done more of them as they go too quickly.

Well that is how my garden grows...Any one else?

Dennis

Well I don't have any vegetables in my garden but we have a beautiful big area of lawn and several flower beds filled with cottage garden flowers. My sepciality however is many many beautiful pots filled with flowers and I love lavender.

I recenlty planted a new trailing rose which was sprouting lots of new shoots and 2 days later all the greenery had been eaten by rabbits so I dug it up and put it back in a pot and then planted some new Red Robin evergreen shrubs along the fence.

I read that rabbits do not like dog hair and as I have two cocker spaniel dogs I have been busily collecting their molting har and putting it all around the plants. So far so good and not even a nibble. My Mum also swears that if you put several cloves of garlic into a water spray that also works..but I have not tried this.

On another note, my hubbie go home safely from Afghanistan on Thursday and it is so lovely to have him back..even though it is only for a week.

Enjoyed reading this thread so thanks Dennis! xxxxxx

I use net plastic fencing they do not like the feel off hitting it. It is about three feet high so I double it to make it six feet. I use six foot green plastic poles. I secure the last part with small bungees as a gate.

OK I figured out where the keep deer put info was. It can be found at

grandtimes com/How_to_Keep_Bambi

Some of the items I did remember were:

bulbs of crown imperial tulips - Repels gophers and moles
elephant garlic gets rid of deer and rabbits.

Dennis
PS there are a lot more repelants listed on the web site including Quix's urine idea.

And a quick PS. My electric fence is solar powered. No increase in Green house gas, electric bills, or anything else.

Quix,

Well I already posted my solution. But I remember there are some plants you can plant in your garden that also keep them away. Of course right now I can't remember where I read that or which plants they were. All I remember right now was some of them were flowers and the others were vegetables.

Alex,

That is too bad...I love those salads which is why I in morning for my lettuce, spinach, and peppers. My new pepper was ( and am still hoping for) Habernara chilli...I do love the wild side some times.

Lulu,

Stevia? I had to look that one up before I knew what you were talking about. I had read some great things about that plant in the way of medicinal purposes for things like Diabetes, and High BP. I also hear it is great for keeping the bugs out of the garden also. Where did you find the plants? I may want to try my hand at it next year. My garden is 20 x 40 feet in size with 4 foot chicken wire all around it plus and electric fence one foot higher to keep the deer out. It seems to be working.

Addi,

Sounds like your tomatoes need more nitrogen. That was what was hampering the initial growth of mine. My tomatoes acted just like yours until I gave them some 28% nitrogen plant food. My friend Dave started his tomatoes the same as I did mine, using the same dirt mixture  and everything, except he started his right off with the 28% nitrogen and now his tomatoes are almost 5 feet tall with hundreds of tomatoes.

Let's post ideas to keep the deer away.  I have heard that if you pour pee all around the garden it will keep them away.  Downside is it is a hassle for a women to collect and go out and pour.  It is easy for a man, but may lead to arrests for lewd behavior.  I'm sure there is a solution.

You garden sounds like it is doing beautifully, Dennis!

Yours, too, LuLu!

I planted tomatoes, peas, broccoli, cucumbers, bell peppers and trying my hand with an avocado bush.  The tomatos are doing terrible!  lol  I don't know why.  I planted them from seeds and they took off at first, but then just kinda quit growing.  Wierdest thing!

My peas are getting cute little pods on them, my broccoli is HUGE and my cucumbers are starting to take off.  My avocado bush is growing well but not expected to fruit this year.

All in all, my garden is hanging in there.  I can't wait til I feel up to taking care of it myself again!

Wow, Alex - why are you on that restriction?  Is it because of that bad boy gallbladder?

Dennis, my little patch of garden is doing well thanks to all the rain and the heat.  My backyard is heavily shaded so I have a little island in the front yard for veggies disquised by flowers (and weeds! ).

The tomatoes are setting on the plants.  The hot peppers are tiny but they have lots of time to grow up.  and there are quite a few out there.

My basil and dill are happy and thriving.

For something new this year I have Stevia growing.  I've never grown this before - hadn't even ever seen it before other than on the grocery shelves in little packets.  Man are those leaves ever sweet. I'm going to try to use some over the summer as the alternative to sugar.

Thanks for asking .... I just have to keep the deer away!

Dennis,
My tomatoes will be ready next week and peppers. To bad I can't eat them because of my diet restrictions. No salad for two months, I live off salad.
