OT Mutiple Sclerosis-creative outlet

by rendean, Nov 05, 2009 10:42PM
My life has changed dramatically.
Unfamiliar sensations invade my body.
Little by little I lose control of what I was but
To give in to this disease is not an option.
Independence is what I treasure; even as it is
Pulled away from me with each new relapse.
Legs, which were once strong, are now
Erratic in function and form.

Symptoms may change my lifestyle but not my
Courage to stand my ground and fight this battle.
Lightening bolt jabs, fatigue and muscle cramps are part of my
Ever changing body.
Regrets for what is lost, are not an option
Only a sense of choosing a middle ground to
Stand and fight this disease that
Invades by body and mind.
Surrender will never happen as I have MS but MS doesn’t have me.

In my original piece, the begining letter of each line is bold -face to stand out and spell Multiple Sclerosis, i.e. an acrostic poem.

My dear, you've been so supportive to all of us, that I hate that you feel hopeless.

I am undx, and my hubby and I had a heart to heart tonight. In his point of view I have to be the all powerful - successfull -- nothing could ever get me down girl. My being sick, with whatever, is holding me back and I am ashamed of that. He doesn't get it though. He doesn't understand why I shouldn't feel all powerful.

Please know that in our minds you are all powerful and that anything you feel, we feel, in one way or another.  Thanks for your poem and your strength.

So nice but so sad... This is the life we were given, we only have one chance, one body. Some days we feel very sad and low, those days are okay because when we have a better we can appreciate it more. I don't take a good day for granted anymore. I try to smile more and enjoy my family a little more as I am sure they enjoy me more in a better state. I wish that was everyday.

Even people who aren't suffering with daily pain have bad days where they don't appreciate life. I wish I could trade shoes with them so they can see the extra struggles we live with everyday.  Be kind to yourself and keep on fighting.

Take care,

Shelley

Ren, when we create something be it a poem, a writing, a painting, or a photograph, it is a personal experience.

When we put it out there for others we are offering a piece of ourselves. We are putting ourselves out there for others to see, share, to love or to criticize .

Thank you for trusting us enough to share your poem with us.

It is a beautiful poem.  Although there are words about loss, I personally found the poem to be more about hope.

HUGS and Have a great weekend.

bump to get this back on page 1 so others can read Ren's work...........

by rendean, Nov 08, 2009 01:40PM
Lu:   Thanks for the bump.

Terry: Thank you for the kind words. Your interpretation is the closest to what I was feeling when I wrote this.

However, I DO see how much it seems to convey a sense of hopelessness.  Knowing that others see despair in this poem has made me look inside myself a little more and re-examine my own feelings. Thanks to all who responded.

Hugs,

Ren
