OTC drugs to use until I see Neuro?

Can anyone give me general advice on over the counter analgesics that are effective and safe to use until I see the neurologist??  I'm waiting to hear an appt time after they review my mri.  My calves ached and my right ribs hurt most of last night and I really would like to get some rest.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Laura

Laura, it depends upon the cause of the pain - if it's neuropathic, there isn't an OTC reliever for that.  Neurontin or gapapentin (I think!) are prescribed for that, which affects how the brain perceives pain.

If your pain is from your muscles spazzing out, try old-fashioned stretches and hot compresses.  With your blood pressure medication, you don't need another blood thinner.

Thanks for the laugh - I fell asleep earlier with my laptop on my lap.  Exhaustion is a wicked thing to contend with.

I guess the best thing to tell you since you are on heart medication, is ask your doctor if he would want you taking further doses of aspirin containing products.  Taking more of any aspirin product would only thin your blood that much more.  He may not want this much of an anticoagulant running around in your system.

I would think that Tylenol would be just fine for someone like you....But always check with your doctor if you are concerned about any interactions with your current medication.

Here's to a good night's sleep....Maybe I should get some Tylenol PM for myself.  I don't sleep well at all, except if it's daylight outside.

All the Best,
Heather

The only thing I am on in that category is the 81mg aspirin x1 for my heart. I am on no blood pressure meds but do take imdur, which is a long lasting nitroglycerin and ranexa (for microvascular disease).  Just wondering if  aspirin or advil or tylenol or whatever is the preferred one.

Thanks.

I have never tried the nightime pain relievers, but maybe something like Tylenol PM or such would be of benefit to you.  I hear the sleep aid is Benadryl, which in me, just makes me a little groggy.  If you are taking any other drugs containing Tylenol, you must watch your 24 intake of this drug.  I believe the maximum amount of Tylenol you can take in a 24 period is 4,000 mgs.  Otherwise you risk damaging your liver.

Hope you find some relief soon.
