Other Pills to take

Hi peeps,

Im just wondering if there is anything else out there to take to help with symptoms, what i mean is..... My mum takes Kelp supplments for a problem she has and she seems to swear by it..

I had a look at Vit B Complex but the possable side effects of taking the supplments were some of the symptoms i already have to chose not to... i know its a bit hippyish but does anyone out there take anything else on top of the meds given by the Docs, Legal over the counter in the Health shop stuff i mean.....

thanks for reading..

George..

Hi all!!

Erin, yes, when tested in 07 my B12 levels were a little low, the GP ordered the B12 shots, but I stopped them because they caused my tremors to worsen.  Now I take B12 in the liquid form.  Can't tell where it helps much, but things may be worse without it.  I'm sure I will be tested again since will be starting with a neuro this month.

I totally agree that everyone should always check with their physician before adding any supplements so as not to interfer with their regular meds.  I am undx and do not take any meds, except these few supplements.

Like ladygraycloud I have an herbal encly and even though I am not dx with MS, I am taking the herbs recommended for my symptoms.  At this time without health ins, the herbal route is my only course, but for all of you, I do recommend, as stated above, your dr should have the last word on what supplements you take.

Hope you all have a great day!!

Hi George
Maybe Quix or one of the other knowledgeable people on here will advise but I believe we need to be very careful which supplements we take. If I am right anything that boosts the immune system can be a problem to auto-immune diseases - for example echinacea. (sp?)

I'm pretty sure that Quix once said she had made a list of the ones to avoid but I can't find it.

Hi there doni :) and you too georgious -

Be careful of which supplements that you are taking! The vitamin D is a YES if you have MS, if not it can build in the liver and be dangerous.

As for you doni :) I don't know what meds you are on but St. John's Wort doesn't mix well with certain meds so make sure your doctor knows that you take it. Also if you are not low on B12 it can build up too.

I am all for ANYTHING that might help. I just want to warn you that you can make yourself worse if you take things that build up or mess with your meds.

Be Careful and Take care - inform your doctor of your choices. Supplements are medicine so when they ask what meds you are taking list the supplements too please.

Hugs,
Erin :)

Hey, Georgeios...

Be very careful about jumping on the bandwagon of supplements and herbal remedies that they'll have at the health shop.  I would recommend a good multivitamin that provides the daily allowance (avoid the supervitamins, as they just strain your liver) and you might consider something with folic acid, or an omega-3 and omega-6 supplement.

Personally I would say just take the multivitamin, and try to include nuts, green leafy vegetables, fish, and olive oil in your diet.  These foods encourage brain growth and will help you recover from a flare faster.  Also strive for a low-fat, low carbohydrate diet.  Don't exclude anything from your diet, but don't overdo it on the red meat and high fats.

Hi Georgios,

I believe almost everyone here, dx and undx, takes  Vit D.

I guess I will sound kinda hippish, too.hahaha  I take gingko biloba for my brain (don't know if it helps or not....heehee), St John's Wort for these moods, Omega 3 Fish Oil, Vit D, and vit B12 in the liquid form...tried the shots but they gave me tremors so had to stop.

I am undx, and don't know if this is really helping or not, but I don't think it is hurting anything either.

Good luck and take care of yourself!!

George,

I take supplements as part of my routine. A vitamin D is a must. My doctor actually wrote me a rx for a large dose to take once a month.

Are you just looking to ad to your arsenal to boost the immune system? I had auto-immune hemolytic anemia which required blood transfusions so I was on bunches of iron supplements & folic acid for 1 year also.

Maybe if you could be more specific of which symptoms you are referring to the wonderful members can chime in from experience.

  Good Luck
  Erin :)
