Pain & Cognitive Problems = Depression

Hi Ya,

So - thanks again for all of the responses for the questions I was going to ask my neuro... He didn't particularly "answer" all of them - dismissed my history since it isn't possible to see if any lesions showed up then. Dismissed Chiari since I do not have chronic vertigo. Attributed my pain to Fibro, (it's sending the wrong signals to my sensors.)

Have another MRI scheduled for September, even though the MRI machine is a 1.5, he wants me to get it at the same place because the 3.5 would not be "the same' and there wouldn't be a "good" comparison to the previous ones..

I DO like this neuro and I can certainly appreciate that it's not "easy" to confirm MS; And, I am thankful, that I do not have worse sx's as many of the rest of you - to which I am so sorry.

The neuro basically said that I should see a phyciatrist (sp)... Even though I am happy (happily married, 2 beautiful sons, not wealthy by any means, but comfortable, etc.)
He concluded that I can't possibly be happy because of the pain and other problems I have. Therefore, I am depressed, and that is causing the pain.

So, fine. I will go to a phyciatrist or physoanalyst, (sp) - And while I am at it, he suggested I get the Wii and play games/exercise - mostly for my kids' sake - so that they can see mommy is active.

Okay - still taking all of this in. BUT - thankfully, my husband doesn't believe I'm depressed either - so we will be seeking a second opinion.

Argh...

Hugs & :)'s

AHHHHHHH....that's so frustrating to hear.

I know the two of us (as well as many others) are in the same boat.

Go to the psych if you want, at least maybe it could shut the neuro up.

Seriously though??? Get a Wii so your kids can see you active. That irritates the heck out of me! Not sure how old your kids are, mine are very young, but I still explain to them there are SOME things mommy just can't do.

We have a Wii at home, and enjoy playing it from time to time, my daughter likes to play bowling and I'll play with her sometimes but usually have to sit down between each round.

Hey, tell the neuro you'd like a Rx for the wii and see if insurance will cover it!!! LOL

Hugs...

sorry for the crappy appt....we deserve better.

Hi ris- I feel your pain. I asked for a psyc referral so we can clear that issue up. One thing that doesn't make sense is that your dr. told you --you must be depressed because of all the pain your in.

First- no kidding! Pain isn't fun. But second of all, if the pain is causing the depression like he thinks than his next statement is illogical.

I know my brain sometimes has brain farts but saying your depression is causing the pain cancels "you are depressed because you are in pain". So I would ask him which one he thinks it is because both can't be true.

Do you think I am in pain and it is making me feel depressed?
Do you think I am depressed and therefore it makes me feel pain?

Keep pushing for answers!

Hugs for you today

Hi RLS,

Many people get told that it's "all in their head" and many here have gone to a psychiatrist to prove their docs wrong. We also have 2 Health Pages dedicated to this subject on Conversion Disorder. The link is:

http://www.medhelp.org/health_pages/Multiple-Sclerosis/So-they-think-youve-got-conversion-disorder/show/1137?cid=36

There is also a page on MS and depression. The Health Pages are located in the upper right hand corner of the page, next to the yellow  icon. There is a wealth of information on a variety of subjects. If you cannot find what you are looking for and no one presently on the forum knows the answer, you might try searching the archives for an answer. The search bar for this is located at the very top of the right sidebar, highlighted in green.

I hope something in one of these pages helps. Personally, I would have the psych exam just to get it off the table. Just my 2 cents worth.

Hang in there,
Ren
