Painful toes

This is my first time, so here goes. I have been experiencing excruciating cramping of my toes on both feet. It has been going on for about 2 years, but lately more often. I never know when it is going to occur. Yesterday I was watching a movie and I had an episode with my left foot with my middle toe distorting downward and rigid. I have had muscle cramping up my right ankle at night that has awakened me and lasts for about 10 minutes. My vitamin D level is 28, and I am on 50K iu for 8 weeks. I have had "buzzing" in my legs and feet for about 6 months.
What is going on?

Hi pjay and welcome.  I'm not sure what is going on.  The cramping toes can be from any number of things.  Do you have MS or suspect that something neurological is going on??

Please feel free to give us more information and we'll try to give you some guidance.

best, Lulu

Welcome to a great forum! There are many things that can cause cramps and tingling. Are you in touch with your Dr.? I am guessing so since you know what your D level is...If not, that is the best place to start. Are you having other issues that led you to the MS forum? If you want, share more about yourself and other symptoms if you have any. If nothing else it just feels good to get it all out :D

Hope your having a good day today.

Thank you for your response. Along with the foot cramping, I have had buzzing in my legs and feet for at least 6 months. I have osteroarthritis and degenerative disc disease in my lover back and neck, with 3 compressed discs. I have been forgetting things lately, and I know, I'm 50, but what the heck? I had unexplained vertigo (out of the blue) 6 yrs ago, and an attack of my right hip that took me to the ER due to the severe and debilitating pain. Nothing was found. I suffer from depression and have so for years, and sleep is almost non-existent. I think I am losing my mind.............

Hello pjay,

I have multiple issues and it's so hard to figure out what is causing which symptom; I do understand how that can make you feel the way you do.

I have had cramps in my foot like you mention, and found some relief from taking magnesium supplements (under my neurologist's advice) and wearing sock to bed.  My roommate has severe leg cramps, tried many treatments, then found that wearing pajama pants & socks to bed keeps her from cramping up.

Lack of sleep can add to so many problems!  I know it makes my pain, MS symptoms, foggy thinking, & emotions all worse.  I hope you have a good doctor that can work with you to find things to help make your life better.  Sometimes one answer doesn't explain or take care of everything, but making some things better can improve your quality of life.

I hope you find some answers and ways to enjoy life more.  Hopefully we can be of some help here.

Welcome

thank you for your comments! I have been to my PA, who mentioned the possibility of MS, but hasn't done anything but prescribe the Vit D supplements. I am close to calling her and requesting a referral to a neuro for testing. I take Trazadone for sleep and symptoms of depression, but it's not really working very well. I'll ask about the mag, thanks for that tip.
I'm so glad I found you guys. I feel like I have someone to talk to that knows what we go through.

You mention trazadone - funny thing is it is a pretty poor anti-depressant but does work well for sleep.  My pcp gave it to me recently.  If you need something for depression you should go back to the doctor and discuss a change.

If they have mentioned MS, perhaps it is time to pursue further investigation.

best, Lulu
