Post LP fatigue wasnt expected

by supermum_ms, Nov 05, 2009 10:34PM
Hi There wonderful people,

I ended up having the LP done on Wednesday, it nearly didn't happen though. Is it me, seriously bloopers seemed to happen a heck of a lot, you couldn't guess half the dumb things that go on around me, good job i'm never surprised anymore and i laugh and not get upset or angry, not like my mum lol

I called the hospital on a whim and found out they had moved my appt to 1pm and they were just about to call me, we arrived 1/2 hour early, i dont like being late for anything, the booking letter BTW didn't state where i needed to go for the LP so i presented at the neurology dept where the LP was ordered. My usual neuro receptionist sent me to the neuro surgery dept who then sent me to another neuro receptionist area which turned out to be also wrong. This receptionist sent me to another department at the other end of the hospital where i was told the neurology receptionist was at lunch until 2pm and to take a seat, which we did. I noticed a young lady hovering near that reception chair (lol) and interupted her lunch and it was a good job i did, i'd been sent to the wrong department, again. Nice young lady went off in search of where i needed to be, and came back to explain that i was meant to be on the other side of the hospital and they had been calling me, mobile turned off because i was in a hospital lol.

Poor girl told us she had explained to the day surgery department that i'd been lost and MUM blew up with indignation, she lost it!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'd been struggling to keep her annoyance undercontrol and she let it all out at the poor girl who had gone out of her way to help. Of course i appologised and told her how grateful i was for all her help, i surly didn't want her the next time this happened for her not to make the effort in her lunch hour, good deeds ect. So now i'm trying once again to settle my mum and get us all over to the other side of the hospital in 2 seconds flat because i am now late by almost 45 minutes. I sign in at the 5th reception desk for the day, then realise that this is the nausty lady who'd made me cry because i was too happy and she took offence for what i'm still unsure lol

Its looking good so far isn't it! Are we calm and feeling wonderful, well oddly i still was deeply amused by it all, you just couldn't guess this stuff, you've got to laugh, really you do! When i get to the bed and told to undress, mum takes off and thats the last i see of her, yep no one to hold my hand, poor me had to be a grown up and do it on my own.

The local anasthetic (sp?) stung like a wasp bite and my legs did a little over reactive jerk but it numbed up pretty quickly, the LP needle hit the bone at one stage that also made me do an over reactive jerk, it seems skinny wasnt always easy. The neuro had a bit of trouble he said i dont want to hit the bone which he then promptly did. lol He showed me 3 viles of clear watery liquid and i spent the next 2 hours flat on my back. I had a great nurse, lots of laughing and long chats, read a book called the Darwin awards, which is very funny if you like black morbid humour which i do and thought fitting for where i was. All in all it wasnt so bad, really it wasnt!

I started stiffening up after i got home and looked like i had a broom stick instead of a spine, then slept 14 hours straight, awake but lying flat for about 4 hours, then slept another 6. I had something to eat and drink then went back to sleep for another 12 hours, in my head its thursday but i've slept the day away and its really friday. My neck hurts, back is still a little stiff and the needle point is annoying but no headache so i think it all went well. I did have to laugh when i was told if i had any numbness of pins and needles to let them know, hard to know when this happens on and off all the time, just from being flat on my back made my left leg and left arm numb about 1/2 hour after the LP. Seems rediculas but you do get acustomed to this and you do forget that its not normal but its my normal so i was waiting for my food to fall off, now that would be unusual ROFL

I'm still tierd, and could do with another few thousand hours of sleep, didn't expect the level of fatigue i've got but it was a very long day, and i should expect to get knocked off my feet if little things exhaust me now but still i'm still always surprised duh!

Cheers........JJ

Fingers crossed theres no O bands!!!!

I am so happy to hear you made it throuigh the LP, albeit with quite an adevture beforehand.  Geez, could things have been more stressful on top of the stress of having an LP, no wonder you are so exhausted.

I hope you won't have to wait long for your results.  Did they give you an idea of how long it would be?

Sounds like you escaped the headache too.  Lucky, lucky lady.

Take it easy this weekend and you should be back to your usual self by Monday.

Love and hugs,

Julie

Good question, i think i'll get my results next month that is if i can get an appt with my neurologist, doubt i'll get one until next year though, timing too close to the holidays. If my gp gets a copy it will be a lot earlier, i did request they send her one and it will be easier getting to see her than this neurologist.

It was actually very funny, from start to finish, i dont think i had the chance to get stressed my mum was doing enough for everyone, she's normally really good about these things but it wasn't a good day for her, i think her being nutty kept my mind off the LP, i was too busy distracting her. lol

Glad you survived it. I think most folks think it is like a blood draw. It is more complicated. One Doctor told me its like having a baby you forget about the pain. I thought he was nuts but now I see his point.

Hope you get your results soon.

Hey there,

Just wondering if this has ever happened to others, it was a first for me, ok thats dumb its the first LP i've had too but whilst he was doing the LP i had a weird thing happen with my left eye, i mentioned it to the neurologist at the time but he said it wouldn't be from the LP.

Anyway i got 3 small but very black irregular shaped spots apear in my vision, i first thought a blob of mascara had fallen into my eye from my eyelashes because it was so black. I realised it wasnt that when it didn't go after holding my eyelid to remove the grit or what ever it was, it just stayed put as i moved my eye around. 3 small blobby spots.

They did eventually fade, i can still see them but they are not as dark now more like a smoke trail and only one is still very dark. I think the left eye UFO's are right in my line of vision but there is one in my right eye, its below what i'm looking at so didn't notice it like the others. Ok is this just another weird me thingy?

Cheers........JJ

Hi there,

Shew, bet your glad those days are over huh?

I wish I knew more about the black looking spots, it will be important to bring that up to the Dr. It doesn't sound like floaters to me because you didn't describe them like that. Though you'd probably prefer to wait for your appt., I think it's best to call.  Make sure nothing is going on there. Maybe whatever it is  - is a coincidental occurance.

It was probably a good thing you were so tired because you were able to lay flat for a long while probably warded off the chance of a leak.

They drew blood too right? Should be standard procedure, but juuust checking.
