I have heard that Lyrica actually worse that Gabapentin for the weight gain.  I have gained a bit on the gabapentin too, but my mother was on Lyric and gained 30 lbs. in a VERY short time.  you might want to reconsider it.

I donèt know if it is a body type and condition that causes the weight gain, but I have heard it alot from people on Lyrica.

Just check it out Pat, and see what your Dr. says,
OKÉ

take care,

Gabapentin and Lyrica are anti-seizure medications (this class of drugs also reduces neuropathic pain) that effect the voltage gating of calcium channels in the nervous system.  Just about all of the anti-seizure medications "can" (but not always do) cause weight gain.  These drugs decrease certain neurotransmitters and increase neuronal GABA levels.

I have been on gabapintin for quite awhile, maybe a yr or so, and I have not gained weight because of it.  I have gained and I have lost but its not the med.

I have no experience with lyrica..

Pat,

I have taken both and neither one caused me to gain weight although the Lyrica caused an increase in cog fog and  had to discontinue. On the plus side, the Lyrica was excellent at relieving neuropathic pain.  I know everyone is different...I hope your experience is a positive one!

I was on Gabapentin for over two years.  I gained 50 pounds.  :(

I have been on Lyrica for about 8 months now.  I don't know if I have or will gain like I did on the Gabapentin because I don't get on the scale anymore.  I don't wanna see how much I weigh anymore.

While it really bothers me that I am quite larger than I have ever been used to...I know the pain I would be having without the drug would be impossible.

I don't know if this helps or not, but this has been my experience with the two...

I am on Gaba and have gained weight.   I am on other meds that cause weight gain too so it's difficult to know what is causing what.

The pain relief i have with the Gaba far outweighs the side effects

I haven't been on the Lyrica so i can't say which is better.

Thank you so much to all of you that have answered. It seems that weight gain is almost inevitable then!

Maybe I should explain why I am sooo worried and then tell my GP too?

I put 1 stone on in 1 month with Gabapentin, not so bad except I was already 3 and half stone overweight and that is being generous to myself it could be more depending on which charts you use!

I have severe (grade 4) arthritis in my knees and any weight gain of any kind has a really bad effect on my pain and mobility - AND I have just lost that stone it has taken me since May last year :(

I have also had some very nasty side effects to many meds over the years and have a list of allergies to drugs as long as my arm. This makes me very, very wary.

Even Co-codomel put me in hospital with overdose symptoms when I had only taken one 30mg tablet - well I had just had an op - I needed it. You end up notr just wary but terrified of taking any drugs.

Does anyone else have these issues?

I do undestand about balancing things but some near death experiences (literally) caused by drugs to tend to scare you.  I am now concerned that I have a real phobia about drugs.

Thanks again

Wow.  :/

I think I would definitely discuss these things with your doc.  I know if it were me, I would.  I am sorry that you have to go through this with medications. :(

Just curious...what is a stone?
