As part of a neuro workup, I had an emg. It revealed peripheral nerve damage, specifically left lumbosacral radiculopathy affecting the L5 level, and damage to the tibialis anterior muscle. A subsequent MRI of my lumbar spine showed multilevel degenerative disc disease, a compressed nerve, and 2 areas of moderate spinal stenosis. I also had an MRI of my cervical spine at Quix's suggestion -- no lesions but mild spinal stenosis beginning there too. Of course, this doesn't exclude MS but is one of several mimics that point away from it. I agree with Angie that your PCP is looking for a problem in your lower spine and, if the EMG shows something there, you'll probably be referred for an MRI of your lumbar spine.
Hi- I was thought to have ms earlier this year. I did 3 mri's, an EMG and LP. The EMG is not a test used specifically for MS. It is used to check peripheral nerve damage (meaning damage at the site of the nerves). MS is a Central nerve problem meaning the damage is done in the brain and spinal cord. It sounds to me like your pcp is looking more for a blockage or something in your lower spine. What are your symptoms?
