MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS COMMUNITY

Quix & Elaine

Results of Cervical and Thoracic spine ordered by Dr. M. I'm a mess, that's the easiest way to say it. Elaine asked me to type report word for word, so here goes: ( was done with and without contrast)

CERVICAL SPINE: The patient has had a interval anterior cervical discectomy and fusion at C5-6. There is virtually anatomic alignment. Craniocervical relationship is normal. Visualized portions of the brain, brain stem, cervicomedullary junction, and cord demonstrate normal signal character and morphology. No evidence for intradural extramedullary lesions. There is mild abnormal signal within the posterior sphenoid sinus layering dependently. Left internal jugular adenopathy (level II measures approximately 11mm. Findings by level are as follows:

C1-2: Mild degenerative changes are noted. No significant stenosis.

C2-3: Posterior disc/osteophyte complex and facet degenerative change result in a mild canal stenosis. There is a mild to moderate right and mild left foraminal stenosis.

C3-4: Posterior disc/osteophyte complex asymmetric to the left and facet degenerative change result in a mild to moderate canal stenosis. There are mild to moderate right, and moderate to severe left foraminal stenoses.

C4-5: Posterior disc/osteophyte complex and facet degenerative change result in a mild to moderate canal stenosis. There is a mild to moderate right and moderate left foraminal stenosis.

C5-6: No significant canal stenosis. There are mild bilateral foraminal stenoses. The previously noted left paracentral mushrooming extrusion has been surgically removed.

C6-7:  Posterior disc/osteophyte complex and facet degenerative change result in a mild canal stenosis. There are mild bilateral foraminal stenoses.

C7-T1: No significant stenosis.

I'm sorry to have put you off.  Spine MRI's are just not a strong point with me.  I never got any training in them.

This mainly shows some degenerative changes in your spine.  Most of it is not noteworthy even though it used up a lot of words.

At C3-4 there is fairly bad narrowing of the window that the peripheral nerves leave the spinal canal through - on the left.  So the skin and muscles that C3-4 innervates could well be affected here.

There is also some canal narrowing at C3-C4.  The canal isn't bing compressed but, it would have to be watched.

That is the worst of the narrowings.

What you have to know here is that hte word "foramina" means window.  It is the space between the vertebrae where the peripheral nerves leave the cord to go out to the body.  So you want to go to a website that will show you where the different peripheral nerves have their effect (either sensation or activate which muscles)

This MRI doesn't sound horrible.
