The cornea has unmyelinated nerve endings sensitive to touch and temperature . When your doctor was touching your eye with a tissue he was checking your corneal reflex.  This reflex can de dimished or absent for several reasons including people who wear contact lenses.  If you know that your relflexes are absent and you have been poked in the eye you should see your doctor with any changes in your vision.

I've had ON as well. Jen is correct. The outer surface of the eye is not supplied with nerves. There is a very tiny and fragile conjunctival covering over the eye that covers the "white sclera" part. It goes up to the Iris "colored part" and stops there.  It is very easily damaged and is very vascular.  If symptoms dont resolve in the next day or two you should seek medical care.  You should have a yearly eye exam anyway especially with a history of ON.  Good Luck!  A cool pack to the eye and keeping it closed for a little while can help.

If you develop drainage or crusties you may have conjunctivitis and that is VERY contagious so seek care if needed.

Interestingly enough, there are no pain nerves in the eye.  Any sensation you get from the eyeball is actually from the upper and lower lids.  It sounds like your eyelid is numb - easy to check, if so.

Any pain or pressure in the eye should be checked out.  If your eye appears to be bulging, that's something to look at.  Also check for color changes in your individual eyes - typically if you're having a flareup, one eye will see colors more or less vividly than the other.
