Scooter!!! :-)

by LATW, Nov 05, 2009 03:36PM
I had an evaluation for a scooter and am getting one.  Yeah!

I had my PT evaluation today.  This was a follow up since I had not seen her in 6 months.  I am showing more weakness in my right side.  Which I knew.

She said I am having trouble functioning and that would be along the nerve pathways.  It was good to get a second opinion on what my MS doctor was saying.  It helped me understand things better.

Ok, so no one is excited about the scooter.  :(

Well I am because Christmas is coming and this means I can get out into the mall and shop!!! :)  I have not been able to do that for a couple of years.  I could go into the stores on the end of the mall like J.C.Pennys or Sears but forget walking around into the smaller shops.  Now I can go back to the Disney store. :-)  Love Disney!

I am thrilled for you - I jsut didn't see your post.  I was never a big fan of mall shopping, so I can't relate to that excitement.  But getting to do what you want to do is very understandable...

congrats on getting it approved - what color is it?

Not sure on the color yet but I know it will fit in the back of our mini van.  I am excited!

They started off wanting me to get a power chair but I do not want one.  Not yet.

I may get to the point where I will need it but I can still walk with a walker or holding onto someone as long as it is not too far.

The news about my function in general today was not to encouraging but it could be worse.

As Rocky the Free range Rooster said in "Chicken Run" - Frreeeeedoommmmmm!  Congratulations!  Ride with impunity!

This will help you get around so much better.  Shop 'til the battery wears down.   Make sure you get a battery charger from Sears.  You can install a 110V outlet into your van and charge your scooter on the way to your next adventure!

Ride On!

I'm very happy for you! Though I also don't share your excitement for mall shopping, I do share the excitement for Christmas shopping :) And I do miss our Disney store - it's been gone for a few years now.

Hey I just read your post..  I am VERY HAPPY FOR YOU! YOU ARE GOING TO FIND YOUR LIFE SO MUCH EASIER! !

This is what you call a VERY GOOD THING !, ...
Just be careful, not racing unless you have room to pass them safely.. You can do a lot more shopping now, just watch out for your budget , you get to shop a lot longer,,
Seriously, I love you attitude you are going to do Great. You didn't say what kind you are getting my first one was a supped up Lark, My Mama helped me get it.
LA, be sure you get one with 2 twelve volt batteries, it will go a lot further and you won't have to charge it so often.
Also make sure they measure your legs .  make sure you don't have to keep your knees bent, this will cause them to ache a lot and cut down the enjoyment Also the seat has to be measured so it doesn't cut off the circulation to the legs. and that the back is the right height. Don't allow them  to sell you one that you haven't been measured for.

I hope these suggestion will be of use to you.... I had to learn them on my own, through trial and and error  it was a pain in the back side in more ways then one... and many other places too  ;-)

Hi there... I'm glad your getting something to help you get around, I jjust had an evaluation done as well and they recommend a Power Chair... I'm not sure if I want one.. but I should get what is needed I guess...

my hubby and I haven't made a final choice yet..

when I rented a scooter in the summer...I learnt.. get one the is padded well on the seat.. the bumps can be hard on your bottom.. I liked the one that had a rest for my head on the back of the seat.. I think three wheels might be easier to manuver..
but balancing is better with 4 wheels..

I like the On charger better then the off charger...I think that's what it's called.. the battery can be charged on the scooter...was easier if you have an outlet near where you would park the scooter..if not, then the off charger I guess.. which I didn't really like..so try to have an outlet near where you park the scooter
hope you don't mind my suggestions... I just learnt alot from using one in the summer.

and the better battery sure makes a difference...

take care

oh yeh.. on charger is easier to charge your battery, if you need to charge it at the mall or somewhere where there is an outlet...otherwise you have to take you off charger stuff with you when you travel??  I could be mistaken there...but find out..OK..

Hi Wobbly,
I am sorry you need the power chair.     :(

We decided not to go with the power chair because I can get by without on right now.  I am still walking but do have some significant balance issues.  but my strength is still there.

All I wanted was a scooter right now.  My home has no large rooms.  I can hold onto something to get around.

So far my legs go in the direction I want and the AFO's help with my feet.

Thanks so much for the advice! :)
