Should a neurologist be seen for Lhermitte sign?

If someone is experiencing Lhermitte sign due to an injury, is a neurologist the best doctor to see for possible treatment? If the person has completed PT for the injury before having Lhermitte sign, would you recommend they return to PT?

My first symptom was Lhermitte's. It coincided with a pulled muscle in my neck so I assumed it was related. Brain and spinal cord MRI scan revealed no lesions. Lhermitte's came and went off and on for a year. Then double vision and other new symptoms led to my dx. I recommend going the neuro route and an MRI.

Your daughter is experiencing a classic spinal neuro sign, it depends on what has caused it on whether there is any treatment or not, it's likely temporary due tot he fall but i think it would be better to have her neurologist see her.

You could contact her physio too, an opinion based on her specific injury and PT therapy, it might not be unexpected after the type of PT she was doing but she's a child, and i think the neuro is the best doctor to see.

Hope that helps....JJ

The first thing I would do is go to your Primary Doctor and have a neurological exam. It is reflexes and such. If it is normal you do not need to see a neurologist. If it is an injury it is not MS. MS is caused by the immune system eating away at the nervous system. There is nothing physical to it it is neurological. Missed signals in the nervous system. So if you had an injury and it was causing pain when you bend a neurologist can't help you. You might need a Neuro surgeon or an orthopedist. Most likely an orthopedist or spine specialist. MS is mostly the brain. PT sounds like a good thing.

I've called our primary doctor and he suggested a neurologist. I can't get her in until June 23rd. I'm taking her back to PT because it's worsening, causing weakness & tingling down her arms. I know it's a compressed nerve. I hate that she has to wait so long just to see a specialist when it's a little worse each day. The only other option for immediate care is the ER, but her medical bills are already well over $12,000. I am at my wit's end and hope they can fix this before it becomes a permanent disability.
