Spasticity question....does this happen?

by tonyad, Dec 27, 2008 06:59PM
I know that there are frequently a lot of questions about the topic of spastcity........But!
I need to know something from fellow sufferers of spasticity.

* I had (2) pretty good days this week (Tues and Wed) and took advantage as much as I could.
Well, Thursday  came around and started off 'fair". As the day progressed I was SLAMMED with FATIGUE!   I had to go to bed and slept pretty much the whole day off and on.
Toward the evening my leg (always left) started up with the spast stuff.

* Friday and Saturday (today) have been horrible. The pain has moved from front of legs to sides and back of legs up to my butt cheecks into my low back. My legs are very week and shakey and I am also getting those sharp shooters in them. My legs are not just tight and painful but they are........in so much pain.

* I doubled up my Baclofen, and Neurotin (sp) per doctor orders......Guess what??  Really not helping that much.
The pain and tightness and along with the muscle twitching is waking me up all through the night. I can not get comfortable and really DREAD bed time.

* My question is.... do any of you have it this bad and meds just barely take the edge off??
Also, I thought a massage might help to relax the muscle somewhat but when I have hubby to go and rub on them, when he pushes to deep, the pain radiates through me like a bunch of needles.

* OK, (2 1/2) days of this is more than enough.  Doctor gave me script for steroids and said that if not better by morning to go to hospital and have some thorough testing done (LP).,

* Is this normal feelings for spasticity?  I have tried to stretch my legs also but to no avail.
Like I said it is usually only my left leg and left arm but it has been both legs....What the heck is going on with me?
Sorry so long, I really need to hear from someone though to know if this is what others feel sometimes.

Thanks in advance.
Take Care,
~Tonya

Dear Tonya,
You are quite fine with the length of your post - lots of good descriptions of what you are experiencing will help someone with advice for you.  But that someone though is not me - I have not experienced spasticity to this degree and mine is not painful (yet!) so  I am not on drugs.

It sounds like you have been working through this in a methodical way with your doctor and if steriods are recommended perhaps that is your best treatment now?

The forum gets pretty quiet on the weekend and especially since we are in the midst of the holidays, but hopefully someone with experience will pass through and be able to give you some guidance or first-hand words of encouragement.

Until then, hang in there!

Tonya,

I am going through spasticity problems right now too. The one thing in common that I noticed is that I too had a couple of good days in a row and decided to take advantage.

Maybe that is where we both went wrong.

I have had the jerking in arms and legs for some time now but the cramps and spasms has always been limited to my legs (mostly left). Now as of last night I am having terrible painful spasms in my left arm and more jerking than usual.

I increased my baclofen tonight because the pain level is too high to tolerate so I'm hoping for relief and some sleep. I think that if it doesn't improve I will follow your lead and call the doctor.

I really do think we did it by over achieving on our good days (bummer).

I hope the steroids help. Keep me posted so I can tell my doctor that's what I need.

Good luck - I hope it improves by tomorrow and you are able to sleep.

  Erin :)

Hi Tonya,

I'm undx, but know exactly how you feel.  I have spasticity in the tops of my thighs and in my arms.  This makes them really weak all the time.

You don't think you could have a low grade fever do you?  Back in Oct, I was suffering the pain in my thighs the same as you, I've had the pain before but this was horrible.

Well, I had an appt with my GP and found that I was running a low grade fever, because of a sinus infection.  I guess that is what made my pain so pronounced.  Just a thought.

I too have tried the stretching to no avail.  The only thing that happened for me was, not thinking, I got down on the floor to do my stretches.

When it wasn't helping I just gave up and tried to get up off the floor.  I was home by myself at the time.  I could not for the life of me manage to get off the floor!!!!  Thought I would have to just stay there til my hubby got home...hahaha

Finally managed to crawl over and drag myself up on the couch.  Needless to say, haven't gotten down on the floor again.  Just wanted to give you something to smile about, picturing this fat old woman crawling around on the floor and not able to get up.....
hahaha

I hope you feel better and this pain lessens for you.  It is awful to feel this way.

Hugs,
doni

Thank you so much for responding.
And doni thank you for the smile. Erin, and I always thought that it was good to be an over-achiever. (ha ha) guess I was wrong (grin)
An update;
Not as much pain today in legs in fact the right one pretty much subsided and of course the left one (cause that is always the one) is still lingering. Today they are very weak feeling. Perhaps that is from being so tight and constricted?
All I can say is "Thank God I am not in that pain and tightness that I was feeling"......I usually get the tight, constricted feeling and sometimes a bit of pain with it but, "WOW" this was crazy.
Hope your week ahead is a good one and "pain free".
Take Care,
~Tonya
