Supplements Advice?

HI there

I'm hoping Quix will see this and advise, it links to a post by Georgious some days ago. Am I right in thinking that you said there is a list of supplements not advisable for auto-immune sufferers. I have looked but can't see it anywhere.

Many thanks
Mand

Hi there Wobbly
Not particularly vitamins, I was meaning any of the things we are sometimes advised to add to our diets to improve health. One that springs to mind is Echinacea, this is often advised to help prevent colds but I have read that this is not advised for MS sufferers as it boosts the immune.

I realise there must be lots more out there like this. I would like to take supplements if they will help me but don't want to risk bringing on a relapse.

Thanks for that Quix, I thought you had said there was a list. What you are saying makes sense, I do avoid supplements that say they boost the immune system.

I will look out for the list.

Cheers

Hi, there.  Yes, I did say this some time ago.  I'll have to look for the newsletter.  It came out of the Rocky Mountain MS Center.  It might be on their website.  It was in an article about the optimum diet for MS.

One of the key things that some docs in MS say is to avoid those supplements that stimulate the immune system.  Yes, some do, mildly.

Too many people believe and tell others that in MS we have a depressed immune system.  The reverse is true.  One or more parts of our immune system are overactive, thus suppressing other parts and some parts are out of whack.  Taking a generic "immune-boosting" supplement may work against us by rev'ing up the wrong part of the immune process.  I think this caution is mostly theoretical, but it makes sense to me.

Unless you know exactly how a supplement affects your immune system, it is probably best to steer clear of the ones that boast that they improve immune function.

I'll see if that list is around here.
