Surgery and Symptoms

I have non-MS related surgery coming up next Wednesday.

Have any of you had surgery and had it affect your symptoms (i.e., cause worsening)?

I've already told the nurse that I have possible MS and they said that it wasn't a problem, but I just wanted to know if the actual surgery or general anesthesia will cause any unwanted stuff!

TIA!!
Pat :)

I had gall-bladder removal surgery before I was diagnosed with MS and yes, I did go into what I now know was a flare-up.  Weather or not this was caused from the surgery, my doctor wasn't sure.  I personally think a flare-up is going to happen weather or not you do anything different or not.  This is just my opinion and nothing I've read.

I'll pray that your surgery goes well and please let us know as soon as you feel up to it.

I'll be praying,
Carol

Everyone is different in the way they react to any surgery.  As with an stressor to the body, MS (or MS limbo-land MS) can rear it's ugly head.  Anything that interrupts the body and it's normal functions, in someone with MS can have a flair-up with a week or so after the stress.  An infection, an operation, a stress at home...anything that disrupts your "normal" activities, can bring on a flair-up.

I had a tooth pulled last week but did not have an infection.  This week the MS is rearing it's ugly head, with increased pain and extreme fatigue, way beyond MY norm.  I attribute this to the pain I had so badly one week before the extraction and the extraction itself that eventually required 4 stitches.  This is enough for this lady to have a flair-up.  I expect the flair-ups and am ready for them; so I take the time to listen to what my body is telling me...so for the next few days, I will take my much needed nap and lay off on any strenuous activity.

So Pat, you may or may not have a flair-up due to the surgery.  If you do, listen to what your body is telling you.  I hope for a speedy recovery from your surgery and keeping my fingers crossed that you have no flair-ups.  Get plenty of rest and try to go into your surgery as relaxed as you can.

Let us know how the surgery goes....I am sure you will do just fine.

Best Wishes, Heather
