Swallow study

Swallow study

Had my swallow study and aspirated on the first swallow I took. Oh joy……

Now I have to go back for follow up with a speech therapist and eat a modified diet.
.
The muscles in my throat are weak and my throat is not functioning properly. She said it is MS related.

I have to eat a soft thickened diet.

Thank goodness no feeding tube.  However I know that could be the case at some point.  MS is a sneaky thing.

It is easy to think things are all in your mind when they really AREN'T!!

wow.. I know that feeling, sorry to hear it's not in your mind.. but it's good that you find out what the problem is..

I didn't realize that it could affect your swallowing to that point?  Good to know and when/if I have a problem, and I think it's in my mind.. I will ask the Dr and see what they suggest.

take care and be careful

Hi, LA. I'm so sorry things have gotten to this point. Swallowing issues can be pretty bad, can't they?

I hope you find a way of still enjoying your food, even if you need a food processor a lot. It's still good.

Hugs,
ess

I knew eating swallowing could be an issue from seeing MS in my aunt a friend and someone I took care of in the nursing home but I didn't think it would happen to me.

I was shocked to hear I aspirated immediately.  I am frustrated because I LOVE a cold glad of ice water.  Now what..............

The tech told me a glass of whole milk would be safer and to drink from a straw.

Things the size of rice are a no no now.  I choked on spaghetti the other day.

She said food was even getting into my airway.
MS really can do things you'd never expect.

Just wanted to let you know that I am sorry about your swallowing issue. Do they think the speech therapist can help build up your swallowing muscles? I sure hope so.

My mom had an awful time with swallowing, and it sure was scary.  We had to call 911 many times for her.  (She was very stubborn and still "tried" to eat steak). Steak was definitely not a good thing to eat.

I am thinking of you,

Big hugs to you,
Michelle

Hi Michelle,
No steak for me unless it is a very tender piece that falls apart.

They are sending me to ST for exactly what you mentioned.

I thought I was going to end up in the ER a couple of weeks ago.  I was truly in a bad situation.

I have had to get a couple of my kids to the ER more than once for choking.  I know how scary it is for those around when something like that happens.  YIKES!!

I'm sorry to hear about the results of your swallow study. At least you know what you're dealing with and with speech therapy hopefully things will improve so you can have that cold glass of ice water.:-)

Sending warm wishes and hugs,
Ren

I am so sorry to hear about all of this happening.  We all take eating and swallowing for granted, but it certainly can be a victim of MS.  I hope it is a short-lived problem, though most likely it is not one that will completely go away.

Please keep us posted.  We haven't had a lot of talk about this problem and S&L Therapy.

Thank you Ren and Quix,
I was shocked at the results to say the least.  Well probably not shocked but very frustrated and am feeling very sucked in to this MS mess right now.

I don't know if anyone else has this problem but it would be interesting to know.  It takes me forever to eat a sandwich.  But that is probably a good thing.

Wouldn't know by looking at me though!! I am at that HOW CAN THIS BE HAPPENING state right now.

But with the support of all of you here I will be ok.  It is scary though I have to say.  I am very careful with what I eat when I am alone.
