Taking Tegretol for tooth pain on PCP's advice...

When I saw my dentist last week, she said that the continued pain on the left side of my mouth where I had the root canal and crown could be because of my trigeminal neuralgia, making it take longer for the pain to stop.

The other choice was that the infection (it had abscessed) wasn't totally gone and we wouldn't know for a few more weeks, or if I got a "pus pocket" (ugh!), or it showed on X-ray because of lots of infection.

I discussed this with my PCP today, and she suggested that I take some of my Tegretol; if  the pain is from TN issues, then the pain should go away.  If it's from an infection; the pain would most likely continue.  Sounds sensible to me!

Besides that, I have nerve pain on the right side, where I need a root canal, and wouldn't mind if that pain subsided, too!

I think my PCP is one smart cookie!  She also consolidated my need to have my thyroid tested, my vitamin D levels, (I've been taking 50,000IU weekly) and a CBC because of me taking the Tegretol.  I wasn't supposed to get my thyroid meds filled until my levels were tested, but she just wrote a new Rx and said that she knew I'd get it done, and we could change the dosage next month, if needed.  Yay!  No more pokes than necessary!

Hmm, I guess this isn't really a question.  Shall we place bets as to whether the Tegretol will take the pain away, or just make me kind of loopy?  :o)

I hope the Tegretol will take the pain away, immediately.  You have been through to much pain lately and it needs to stop. I don't know if TN is better than an infection, but either way I hope you get some relief soon!

Did she have you any pain meds? If it is an infection that should help...

Hugs,
MIchelle

I have been taking my normal vicodin for chronic pain, but that doesn't help with nerve pain.  I take Lyrica which is good for nerve pain, but my insurance only covers so much a month, so my PCP prescribed the Tegretol in case my trigeminal neuralgia should flare up; it knocked out my last flare up quite well.  It is great for nerve pain, especially TN.

I took 13 days of Amoxicillin to get rid of the infection, and it should have taken care of it, but it got way up in the bone; hurt all the way up to the side of my nose.  I'm just hoping it didn't get in too deep, and is festering away somewhere.  My sister got real sick in a similar situation, but she has a heart condition that I don't.

It would be nice to figure out if I need a different or stronger antibiotic.

I took 100 mg. of Tegretol 2 hours ago, and am not sure if it has helped or not.  I'm going to eat dinner and see if chewing flares things up.  It could take a few doses to help, anyway.

Thanks for the hugs and hopes for my relief!

Bummer......sorry your tooth is still hurting. My dry socket pain finally went away, but was one of the most painful things I have had lately. Isn't it amazing when your teeth hurt you hurt all over!  I hope the tegretol helps soon, and that it's TN and not infection in bone. That can be really bad healthwise, as you already know. Just take it easy if possible, and soft foods, no salt water taffy!!! LOL.

Bummer, 10 day vacation over, back to work tomorrow.
