This drug might be useful for some.....

My allergy dr just prescribed me a drug called aterax, as required though evenings only, for my allergy issues.  She also told me that it might help with some of the weird sensory stuff.

Anyway, I researched this drug - it is one of the first antihistamines, and seems to be very safe.  Aside from antiallergy, it's effects include sedation, antianxiety, anti-nausea (I sure need that at the moment), some effect on pain relief, and it also enhances the effects of other pain killers.

Seems it may be worth looking into for some people - there's no harm in adding more weapons to our arsenal.

I haven't tried it yet, though I did fill the prescription, mainly cause the doc told me not to try it until a night when i'm not so busy the next day, in case the effects last longer than anticipated.

I put some info below from wikipedia, which has a really comprehensive summary:-

"Hydroxyzine (pronounced /haɪˈdrɒksɨziːn/) is a first-generation antihistamine, of the piperazine class that is an H1 receptor antagonist. It was synthesised in the early 1950s and the medicinal formulation of this drug was announced in the 04 August 1956 issue of Chemistry Week.

It is used primarily as an antihistamine for the treatment of itches and irritations, an antiemetic for the reduction of nausea, as a weak analgesic by itself and as an opioid potentiator, and as an anxiolytic for the treatment of anxiety.[1]

Even though it is an effective sedative, hypnotic, and tranquilliser, it shares almost none of the abuse, dependence, addiction, and toxicity potential of other drugs used for the same range of therapeutic reasons."

Cheers all!

Hi,

SL,  when i was checking internet, I found that many of the first generation antihistamines do have effect on mood.  Interesting, huh!?

I tried the Aterax last night. I took it about 11.30. I definitely should have tried only 1/2 not 1 tablet (I was feeling so bad last night I couldn't even be bothered cutting the tablet in half before I took it, besides my dogs were fighting and I was trying to keep them apart - bit hard when they both sleep on my bed!!!).

It did not make me feel sleepy, though I was feeling a bit dizzy, disoriented - but when I tried to sleep at about 12:15, I was immediately out like a light. I set my alarm for 8am. I had some effects this morning. Had trouble waking up and was feeling spacey and really out of it today. Doc Michelle did mention I may need to work out best timing to take this med so that there's no lasting effects in the morning.  Also that it may take a while to adjust to it.

However, I was so out of it yesterday afternoon/evening that I don't know if how I am feeling today is a spillover from yesterday or an after effect of the med. Possibly both - it usually takes several days to recover when i have a day like yesterday.

The good thing is that the Iterax seems to really helps with the nausea from the bromocriptine. I was able to eat this morning. But that benefit is worn off now and feeling nauseous already.

Can't really tell about the sensory stuff.  They've been more than usual the last week or so.   Anway I will have to play with this med and see how it best works.....

Interesting drug.

Funny, but now that I think about it, there HAS to be something in allergy meds that do something w/emotions, because I remember a horrifying time for me when my Grandma died suddenly.  I was physically sick. Took allergy pills (which I never do - I hate them) too calm the nose and eyes leaking constantly in order to get on the plane.  Ironically, my mood simmered and I was able to cope.  I had a noticable change in my mood.

To add on, a friend of mine (who's a nurse) lost her sister, and was taking something to remain calm.  She combined the allergy pill w/her med.  Coincidence? I'm thinking not.  There has got to be something to it!

just rambling, but it's very interesting

Sounds interesting.  Especially the non-addictive part.  I wonder how it may help with the sensory issues.

Let us know how it goes!
