Throat symptoms

by JENNIEO, Jul 25, 2008 05:48AM
about 6 years ago, I had mono for the second time, and where the first time I had it the most obvious symptom was the WORST sore throat I'd ever had, this time the symptoms were totally different - difficulty breathing, feeling like my throat was closing, and extreme fatigue.  It has occurred to me that in the past year, whenever I'm under stress I have the very same throat issue - feels like it is closing, to the point that my voice changes, and it comes on very quickly.  I sing in my church choir and by the time we are done on Sunday morning I am very hoarse.  I'm not crazy about performing especially because our group is small because sometimes the hoarseness hits me mid-song and I end up mouthing the words intead of helping the group out!  Anyways, I wondered if hoarseness, brought on by stress or otherwise is something that any of you have experienced. I'm not dx'd yet, just starting out on the fact-finding....realizing that some stuff I (or my doc) was just shrugging off as caused by stress before is probably an important piece of this big puzzle.

hi   jennieO,

i   hope   ou ffeel 'ok' today.
sorry this is happening with yoou. NOt what you ever imagine , huh?

Because of the  quu ality oof my voice (breathy weak croaky raspy etc) and choking swallowing problems,  i ihad a videolyrnoscopy (oh and a swallow study).
It reveiled a slight spasm on one side and a weakness on the other.
I had done extensive voice therapy and speech therapy ,and while it never came  back close to normal, now I am  safer eatting and  can be heard and undersstood.

Iiiif it comes from you vocal folds, and happens when you are tireed, I can asee how it gets worse with fatigue.
I am  not familiar with your history (sorry)  and what doctors you s ee and tests you run?

Have you brought this up to your doctors?
i hope you are doing well today, amo

Hoarseness can be related to MS and several MS mimics and other conditions. Hoarseness can be a less common symptom according to the National MS Society. The name for this is dysphonia. Dysphonia is the term used for changes in voice quality, including hoarseness, breathiness, nasality, poor control of pitch.

I'm not sure if it can be brought on by stress or not so maybe someone with better knowledge will come along but, I imagine it could, since stress can aggravate symptoms in many diseases.

Hope This Helps
