Tips on how to read/search forum info

Back again, I am sure I should have been able to figure this out myself, but since I havent:

I see a post today that looks to be originally from 2008, others are commenting on it now.

I posted one time and someone replied that I had posted on an old thread, and should start a new thread for more visibility.

Are there instructions for how to find current threads? post current threads? search current threads?

The only thing I know to do is to come to the MS forum page and scroll down. Am I missing vital technique?

Yes - you got it. The front page (that's just my layman term for it) should also include the button to post a question. Some other things off to your right like the "recent activity box" and the "health pages - it actually may say most viewed health pages."

Already I 'feel' better as I dont feel so stupid to still be wandering around. So, thanks for all replies!

@ Shell: you mention to use the 'front page' when i click on "back to community" is that the front page?

I do see the next pages at the bottom and do scroll thru those....think I am on the right track, just a slow learner and easy forgetter.

Hi again. I see several veterans have come through with good responses since I started wiggling my way to an answer.

All say pretty much what I said, though differently, of course. The only real difference I noted is that Shell answered that the results from Search this Community are dated. That's true, but only if you click on the actual post, and not if you're just looking at the list of results.

MedHelp, please fix this!!

Hi. Fear not, this is pretty simple. Don't let it get to you.

If you have a question, it's a good idea to try the 'Search Forum' box first. That will bring up all the instances where the phrase you've searched on has been used in the past. Sometimes this can be quite helpful, and you will get your answer without even posting a new question.

Other times, though, it will be a lesson in futility. You could get hundreds of matches, and MedHelp doesn't ease things by the simple expedient of breaking them down in order of date, oldest to youngest, or the reverse. So you'd have to click on each one, which can be pretty daunting. Being as specific as possible can help, but being extremely specific will knock out a lot of good responses that were worded slightly differently. Maddening, I know.

What happens more frequently is that a questioner types a search string into Google or another search engine, and a good MedHelp match comes out near or at the top of results. So the questioner clicks on that, finds an answer, and wants to add to it. The only way to do that is to join MH and start the process. So that's why something from 2008 appears as the last time before now that the issue seems to have been raised. In reality, something with different wording but much more recent has been discussed on the forum.

My suggestion is to use the Search box first, trying several different turns of phrase, and see what happens. If you can't get reasonable matches after several tries, then post a new question. Old-timers here will point you to various good discussions on the topic, if there are any, and you're off and running.

I think the reason you wind up backspacing to entirely new stuff is that the system is taking you back to the newest page, dating from now, and not the last page of the discussion you were reading.

I hope my explanations make sense (some don't!). But if you need more help, try posting in the MedHelp Suggestions forum. The moderators and managers there want to de-mystify things and will get to the bottom of any questions you have.

Hi jmp- -

If you are using "search MedHelp" you are likely presented with a list of threads matching your inquiry. There don't seem to be any dates on this top level. If you open a listing, next to the original poster's name, you will see the date on which the thread was started.

I just searched on DMD and was presented with a list of DMD related threads. I opened the first one and saw that it was created in 2008. I went to page 24 of the initial lisitngs and the first thread was created in 2011. Tis tells me the search results are displayed in oldest to newest order. If you want to see the newest threads navigate to the last page of the search results.

As to the backspace issue, it many browsers, like Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, the backspace key acts like clicking on the back arrow. It will take you the the last page viewed. If I am on the NY Times home page, and I navigate to MedHelp, hitting the backspace key will take you back to the NY Times page.

Hope this helps,
Kyle

I'm not sure if there are instructions anywhere.

To post a new topic/question, click on "Post A Question" which is in an orange box on the line just above the top/most recent question.

You then key in a title, and then your question/comment.  It's always better to be as descriptive as possible in your title, eg: instead of ""Help!" type "Need help with disability claim"' or "need help with disclosure at work" or "need help dealing with my treatment decision". You get the idea.  Before you submit your new post, as an option you can add "Tags" which are key words in your post that will make it more likely for your post to come up in future searches by others.  You can tag any words you wish.

To search for existing posts on a topic, type in key words in the "Search this "Community" box with is on the right hand side of the same line as the "Post a Question" field.

For example, if I'm looking for all posts that were about diplopia, I would key in the word "diplopia" in "Search the Community"  Using this example, I got 164 results.  I then can scroll through page by page to see the various posts that included this term.  I could also search "double vision" as a synonym of diplopia to find more related posts.

Unfortunatley the search function is pretty basic; no advanced search that allows one to limit results by a date/timeframe, etc.  It sems to me that results are returned in no particular order; if I'm missing something please anyone let me know.  And you have to actually open up each post to see the date on it; it would be nice if dates displayed under Titles in search results so one could quickly scroll through to find the more recent ones.

Hope this helps.

Hi there,

Use the front page, and then the others for new, and newer type posts. i.e., when you are on page one, and then look to the bottom, you will see 2, 3, 4 and so on. Use those pages to go back further day by day to breeze through posts.

To search "topics" Click in the "search this community" box. Type what I have here in quotes as an example: "topic wants"  Use the quotes too!

Once you do that, let me know what you think. You will get a slew of posts that you can read through. They are dated so you know when they were started and discussed. Old discussions are useful! Hope you find this easy to maneuver through.

As for the backspace. Don't use it. Use your browser back and forth buttons (they are labeled with an arrow) for best results on any website you use.

Also, in case this helps someone to understand what I need to do differently, i find that I can be on a post, read and backspace, but honestly, it seems to take me to a completely different page. Many times, I find info that I then cannot return to.

Do I just need a computer literacy class?
