Tramatic events bringing on symptoms

Tramatic events bringing on symptoms

Have any of you experienced a traumatic or undramatic event that precedes a worsening of your symptoms or an attack?  I was in a car accident in June, and a few weeks later became a wreck with so many symptoms.  I was just curious what you have all encountered.

Hi!  I am in limboland with no dx yet but I have been reading for months on MS and lots of other neurological disorders and I do know that stressful physical and emotional events can bring on flair ups and exacerbations or pseudoexacerbations.  I do not know the physiology of why but I am sure someone who does will be along soon to answer that one.

I am sorry about your car accident and I hope that you are OK!

Take care and Have a nice night!

Yes, tramatic situations can bring out symptoms and make existing symptoms worse.A car accident can bring on symptoms, cause new ones and so forth.

I had a drunken intruder a while back and I ended up in the ER I was in a full blown MS attack.I was  doing good until that night.

I was the driver of my van when a guy in a car blew through a stop sign and t-boned my vehicle, which resulted in having my vehicle written-off.  I was in shock at the time of the accident and was injured...lower back and knees and a wicked case of whiplash.

I was fine before the accident.  I never took a sick-day at work.  I was active and busy all the time.  But I couldn't get better after the accident.

I recently discovered the possibility of having MS when the Neurologist wanted to send me for MRI of the brain and spine.  I had the MRI's done this past Wednesday and will be given my results in a couple of days.

My question is:  Would a traumatic experience cause a Multiple Sclerosis Relapse???

I didn't know I had MS, if I do.  The insurance company is trying to get out of taking responsibility for my current condition.

If anyone can shed some light on this topic for me, please contact me at your earliest convenience.

Thank you!

I'm fine I gotta big dog, she's a chicken, whimpy and scared of her own shadow, but a real trooper when needed. She alerted me then stood on the guy until our local PD got here.

Suze2 yes an incident like a car accident can bring out MS even when its been hidden.I didn't know I had MS until I had a tramatic back surgery in 1998.Stressful events can flair up the unknown.

I've been noticing lately that when I get emotionally upset (when the kiddos are being particularly troublesome) my legs and arms sometimes will worsen with their "tinglies and buzzies".  Normally my arms are fine now, and have been for a few months, but if the steam starts coming out my ears, everything seems to start going haywire.  Not sure why it happens, but it does. :)  Best to practice my meditation and deep breathing I suppose.

Hi

I had a car accident last nov 2006 it was my fault i went into someone at 40mph i suffered whiplash and a lower back injury, but i walked away from though my car didnt!!!
I was ok till the next day when i woke up in agony i went to a private chriopractor that id been too on and off for a old shoulder injury from a horse riding accident when i was 10 (still bothers me now) and they took xrays they noticed slight degenaration (excuse my spelling) in my neck but my back looked ok so it was just tissue and muscle damage which over time they sorted after three months and i stopped going.

In Jan i started having many other issues that just didnt tie in with the accident balance issue pins and needles eye pain foggy head word recall problems so i was refered to a neuro in May and he ordered a brain MRI and spine but it came back normal, two weeks after seeing him in may i came down with muscle spasms all over my body form my head to mt toes i went back to him and he gave me some medication which has since been changed and i have had flare after flare of either muscle or nerve pain with not much let up inbetween, i would say there were issuse before the car accident going back to my second child being born but iv always been able to work untill now.

I have other test coming tomorrow and a repeat MRI in Nov so i hope i will start to find out what is wrong i had thought it might be fibromyalgia but my neuro seems to think its neurological.

i hope you find some answers soon. shock can have a awfull effect on your body and mind and you can suffer post tramatic stress disorder.

take care

I hope you will allow a "veteran MS'er" to chime in with her thoughts about this subject.  ANYTHING that causes a disruption in your body...ANYTHING, can cause an MS flair-up.  This is information is even for those not yet diagnosed.

MS is a weird creature....stress, an infection, heat and yes even cold, can cause a change in symptoms.  True relapses last more than 24 hours and endure for weeks or unforuntately sometimes, months.  Remissions can bring about complete recovery of all the symptoms, but with every relapse, remissions can be what I call incomplete.  Some symptoms remain.

As in my case, I have permanent damage caused by the MS.  I am lucky that I don't have any "new" symptoms, just an aggravation of all the old symptoms, when I am in a relapse.  I notice that I have less and less true remissions, which means that I have progressed in my disease course.  This is not unusual, since I have been dx'ed for 12 years and I am now in my 50's.

So yes, anything that changes the normal rhythm of the body, can cause a flair-up.

Yes, all three of my relapses have been from tramatic/emotional events.

Just to say that I am defiitely of the opinion that traumatic events can be strong contibutary factors to having an MS relapse. I do not wish to drag up lots of past events in my life and am well aware that many of us on the forum have faced and overcome different types of trauma...but certainly bereavement and car crashes seem to feature highly.

best wishes
