Transient Tingling and numbness

Transient Tingling and numbness

I was just wondering if any disease that damages the myelin in the white matter cause transent tingles and  patchy numbness. I have been experiencing this  in the back of my calves and the sides of my forearms and some in my face. It seems to come on with stress or very hot bathes and when I first get up in the mornings. It doesn't last long though, only about 10-15 min. I didn't notice this symptom until after my spinal tap. When I asked  my neuro about this he said it was probally some residual nerve damage from the ADEM.

I guess what my question really is can illness like ADEM that produce the same kind of damage as MS cause some of the same residual symptoms? I looked up the hot bath test that is found in MS and it says that the damaged myelin causes slowing when the core body tempature is elevated even slightly. Since both of these conditions cause this myelin damage does it make sense that they both would have this affect to warm baths or stress?

You are right on, in your own observations.  Yes, both disorders can cause this tingling and numbness you speak about.  I don't think there is a place on my body where I have not had it.  It's aggravating.  I used to be afraid of it, but now it's just become a nuisance.

Hi, I put a call into the neuro yesterday to ask this very question. He called me back today and said that it could be from either of these disorders. I had read up on the hot bath test that they used to rely on, before the MRI came along, to help dx MS. It says that the symptoms are from the core body tempature rising even a little. The damage on the myelin slows conduction of the nerves when the tempature is increased. I just figured if this was the reason that any disorder that damages the myelin could cause the same thing.I am glad I ask because it was starting to scare me too!
