What? "a doctor that could make me feel powerless, hopeless, psychotic and insignificant all at the same time" Isn't that what a neuro's job is, well that's my experience when seeing a neuro.lol seriously i'm a tough little cookie, always have been but there's nothing like feeling 'irrelevant' when you know you need some help and the person with the power is playing mine are bigger than yours!
Oh its called 'poor judgement' is that a fancy way of saying clumsey? What a hoot! I've always had perfect and I do mean perfect hand control, my stitches are almost invisible (should say use to be lol) each stitch approximately 2 millimeters in length and about the same apart, that takes perfect hand control to pull off. NOW you'd think a toddler did the stitching lol
Such a dumb statement, of course people with tremors cut them selves, what a tool!
Chin up girl friend, your so not alone!!!!!!
Cheers..........JJ
Preprepped veggies, frozen veggies, and all that sure are a necessity sometimes, aren't they? I'm so used to chopping myself, and now it's frustrating and dangerous.
I have never been able to master that curled finger grip while cutting either. It feels so awkward, and like I have less control over my hand and the veggie. It seems more dangerous to me. For what it's worth, nobody likes watching me cut veggies on a good day.
:O
Oh JJ, hilarious. I can't stop laughing. So needed after neuro decided today to ween off the baclofen, the one thing that helps the tremors, spasms and twitches. And as Donald Trump would say, "You're fired." It's been a long time since I've happened upon a doctor that could make me feel powerless, hopeless, psychotic and insignificant all at the same time. Don't need it, especially right now. According to him, people with hand tremors don't cut their fingers in the kitchen. He called it poor judgment, the reason I cut my fingers, and blamed the baclofen. Okay? Bring in the Donald.
Hubby is going to be holding the most coveted position of sous chef for a good long while it seems. I'm thinking of having a special chef's cap made to celebrate his promotion in hopes my son will strive to fill his shoes. You know how competitive the boys can be. Hey hey?
I wonder how he'd take to styling hair and tweezing eyebrows too? Do you think . . . nah, probably not.
You've got to laugh, huh... But as JJ says, it's funny until somebody loses an eye.
I think part of the problem is hyperreflexia - instead of a small controlled movement, the arm or hand is going WHEE! and flinging things across the room. Combine that with a weak grip on the object and you're going to have a problem.
I've developed new cutting techniques that are safer. For example, keep the tip of the knife on the cutting board, so that you don't have to move it. Then move the vegetable under the knife. Something I've seen with professional chefs is a curling of the fingers so they're always against the knife, so there's not a danger of going underneath. I never have mastered that one.
I'm deadly with a knife, at one stage it got so bad everyone was banned from the kitchen sheesh all i did was throw the butcher knife across the kitchen, it missed!
DH flinches if my hands are anywhere near his face, thats because i once tried to remove a hair from his eyelid and promptly poked him in the eye instead, really really hard, i was so shocked i ended up in fits of laughter, dh said he really likes the way i show my love him for him lol!
On the weekend i'd just told ds off for getting more water on his clothes than the bike he was suppose to be cleening. I thought i'd help, picked up the hose that has the spray trigger nossle on the end, pressed the trigger. Ahhh yes did the jerk, and sprayed ds in the side of the head (i'm laughing just remembering it lol) it took me a few seconds to recognise i was spraying him, oops too slow reaction when theres water involved. He was cackling with laughter. Now you try to hold on to parental rightous indignation when he's now wetter than ever ROFL!
My tremors are pretty dormant at the moment (yeah) but the unexpected jerk still happens and always when i least expect it. Last night eating dinner, I jerked and salad flew (at speed worthy of a guiness record) over my shoulder, narrowly missing our youngest. What was hillarious was, ds looked at the mess of salad on the floor, shrugged and kept on eating, when i looked at dh he was doing his best to pretend he hadn't seen, but the smirk on his face had me cracking up, oh well things happen.
If you can, try and be prepared for accidents, if you've got a knife in your hand, never with out thought do an action, think think think. If your concentrating, thinking through the process you'll have a bit more control and less blood in the cooking lol.
Cheers.......JJ
Wow. The worst thing I have done is some miss spellings and some extra letters in a word on the keyboard. My tremor is more of a fine motor intention tremor that I notice while typing and using my cell phone.
Bob
lol I like you thoughts on this.
I resorted to buying frozen veggies for the most part. I can't eat frozen green beans they taste awefull but the corn, brussell sprouts and mixed veggies are ok.
Its not that I have problems with my hands it is the standing and the heat that I can't handle so I resorted to fast easy meals lol I do fix roasts but that doesn't involve standing over a hot stove.
Glad to hear he is helping with the cooking duties, always nice to have help in the kitchen :)
