Vertigo and ear symptoms

by angela5674, Jan 25, 2008 10:07AM
I posted this at the end of another post, but it may have gotten missed.  So, I'll start a new post...for the past couple of weeks I'd been having this "whooshing" sound in my right ear (don't know how else to describe it).  I would also, even before this, have periods where my right ear would lose normal sound and be replaced by this ringing sound.  Would this have any connection to my now having vertigo?  I had gone to my GP to make sure it wasn't caused by an inner ear infection, and he said my ears looked normal.  This prompted me to call my MS doctor who promptly ordered the solumedrol infusions that I'll be starting Tuesday.  Anyway, just wondered if there's any connection with all of this or if anyone else who has experienced vertigo had these symptoms before the vertigo came on?  Thanks in advance, Angela

Wow!  I have the same thing!!!  I get it real bad when I exercise!  (the whooshing) then every now and then I get the deafness and deeper ring in my ear.  It is still high pitched but not as high as the constant ringing when everything is quiet.  I am not Dx but have wondered if anyone else has this problem!
I hope someone chimes in with a better answer than I can give!

hi..I'm not yet Dx..probable MS..I have this Whooshing noise in my head almost every week.  It seems to be there before I have one of my horrible Vertigo attacks.  Then it's gone for awhile, but then comes back.  I've had these for two and a half years now, these were my first symptoms and I've had MRI, LP, all different test.... the lesions are not in the area...Still waiting for Cervical Spine MRI...I now have alot more symptoms, double/blurry vision, pain in legs and joints. pins and needles on left side.  etc...  you are not alone with this..
Hopefully they will figure it out
take care

Thanks for the responses so far.  I had never had the whooshing until a few weeks ago.  Like I said, I've had the deafness and tinnitis for awhile.  Vertigo has only been since Sunday.  It's nice to know that it all seems to add up.  At least maybe this way, I'll maybe have a "heads up" when the vertigo comes.  How often do you guys get vertigo?  Angela

I have been disabled by chronic vertigo (peripheral kind) for the last 6 years.  I have a mostly left roaring in my head at all times.  But, I also do get the whooshing, and the sudden severe dimming in my hearing, followed by a ringing and a change in the axis of gravity.  It feels like "down" tilts and stays there until I get used to it.

I have some form of unsteadiness in space and difficulty with lurching and falling 24/7 except when asleep.  THEN, MS happened on top of that.

Vertigo is a common symptom in MS.

Good to see ya!  It's always nice to have your feedback added!  What do you mean by "down" tilts?  Also, what made yours disabling?  Is it that it just never went away?  This is the first I've ever dealt with this.  I start solumedrol on Tuesday and am hoping that helps.  Does solumedrol help yours?  Angela

What made my vertigo disabling was the severe fatigue, the difficulting reading, The cognitive problems that are common with severe, and chronic vertigo and, then, eventually realizing that I couldn't think fast enough in an emergency.  In the first year also I had many falls and several admissions to the ICU with concussion.

I mean that it feels like the floor tilts and never goes back.  Then over about a minute I get used to the new "downward direction."

For the first couple years steroids did help.  But, I have been diagnosed with Autoimmune Inner Ear Disease and on both sidesmy vestibular organs have pretty much been destroyed.  Without something to focus my vision on, I go over like a felled tree.

That makes sense.  I wonder if the fall I posted about back at the beginning of December was a precursor of vertigo symtpoms.  Thinking back I didn't feel dizzy or anything.  My foot just couldn't find the stair.  At that point I fell and cracked my head, requiring 6 staples.  I've done that once before that incident and once about 3 weeks ago.  Luckily I caught myself on the railing both of those times and swung on it until I regained my balance.  Do you think this could be related even though I wasn't dizzy?  Angela

with my Vertigo, I get a strange feeling a few days before, and the whoozing noise...then out of no where the room starts to move back and forth..not wide, just short moves...my eyes move back and forth as well (Nsytgmas?) It lasts 3 - 15 min or more....can happen anywhere, anytime. I'm very tired afterwards and find it hard to communicate, walk, think, etc for a few days.  Then I might feel abit better, but within a few weeks..it starts up again.  Now this does not count all the pain, and vision problems etc...  Good luck with your...we are hear for you..
take care

I forgot to mention, when the room moves, I fall over and cannot get up. I can move my arms, but not my head...if I try to, I fall down (dead weight)... it has lasted up to 1/2 hr as well.. I will get nauseated at times and vomit too...not that often though.  I can try to talk while it's happening, but fine it too difficult.  I hear and see, but cannot look sideways or move my heads sideways at all, I will fall....thanks

sorrry, i keep forgetting...I have to hold onto something or fall over...like if I'm on a chair..I have to hold the arms...or if no arms..I lay back abit and hold the back of the chair...I have fallen down on the floor a few times...I just stay there until it's over and crawl to the bed or couch to lay for awhile.

hhope that's it..

Thanks so much for the info.  At first I became very nauseas and almost vomited twice.  This was when I didn't know what was going on and I tried to stay up and not rest until it passed.  Now I "go with the flow" and immediately sit or lay down when I feel it coming on.  This is such a pain though.  I'm not going to work again next week due to the steroids I'll be starting, but I'm nervous about going back because I go up and down ALOT of steps each day.  Angela
