Vision field test

by LATW, Nov 06, 2009 12:41PM
I had my eye appointment this morning and my vision field test on both eyes were not good.

Doctor said no night driving and only in familiar areas during the day.

I am irritated because when I had my MRI a couple of weeks ago they did not do my eye orbits even though I have a history of ON and eye problems in my left eye now.

My eye doctor thinks I probably have ON in my left eye now. shoot!

Is this "vision field test" something that a regular ol eye doctor (like at the mall) can do or is it a eye specialist you saw? I get pain in one eye that worsens and becomes a horrid headache if I don't cover it with an eye patch. Wearing even my weakest prescription of glasses brings it on, so I've been wanting to see a doctor about it.

Thanks!
Love,
Diemyn

Hi Diemyn,
I am don't know if I would go to a mall eye doctor.  I am not sure how equipped they are and how up to date their machines are.

I go to a regular eye doctor BUT he is highly recommended by the specialists.  So he is a very up to date eye doctor. He has all of the up to date gadgets.

If you have a specialist in your area and can get in to see him or her with out a referral I would do it.

If you need a referally call your medical doctor and see if you can get one.

Hope this helps a little.

Without sounding like a know it all jerk here....I would suggest a Neuro-Ophthalmologist for the eye, when it might have anything to do with MS or problems from a neurological source.  I see, that LA even suggests that, also.  So please listen to LA, she knows her stuff...

LA's eye doctor seems to be one of the few "regular" eye doctor's that knows more than the "average bear," when it comes to neurological problems of the eye.  Your lucky LA.  Stick with him, he knows what he's talking about.  He sounds like the kind of doctor that would send you to a specialist, if there was something that he didn't have enough knowledge about to treat.  Those are the kinds of doctor's we all want in our lives.

Neuro-Ophthalmologists are particularly helpful when going through the diagnosis period and testing for MS.  I noticed my regular eye doctor didn't know much about Optic Neuritis in MS and said he could see no damage to my Optic Nerve, where as the specialist saw paleness on my Optic Disc right away.  He could also see the permanent black spot in my field of vision, that was from one of my first bad bouts with O.N.  The other eye doctor said it was a floater.  Gosh, floaters are not black, round dots in your line of vision that can be seen in the same place no matter which direction you look in.

It was a Neuro-Ophtho that was smart enough to send my daughter directly to an MS Specialist, to be further evaluated for what he felt was directly related to MS.  With the vision and balance problems she was having, the Neuro-Ophtho put two and two together, when he saw the pale Optic Disc.

I'm sorry, LA that the radiologist did not concentrate on the orbits, when doing your MRI.   Your eye doctor has "seen" the problems you are having though and I am sure that would be in all of your reports.  If you are like me, I would have liked to see the orbits and Optic Nerve concentrated on, during the MRI, with and without contrast dye.

It seems that you and my daughter have the same driving restrictions, but her second bout of O.N. is so bad, they really do not want her diriving in the daytime, due to her balance and double vision.  Solumedrol causes alot of problems for her blood sugar and blood pressure, so they are trying to hold off giving that to her again, so soon as her last treatment.

Sending you all my best wishes and big hugs, LA.  Always.

Hi Heather,
I have the irritating black dot but it does come and go.  However it is not the floater type of thing. I started having problems with my left eye with pain back in august.

I just assumed my MS doctor would do my eye orbits BUT he didn't.   Maybe he saw no point since my eye doctor is on top of things.  But I will say my MS doctor is on top of things also.

He said just because I do not have a lot of lesions does not mean I do not have MS.  He said I probably fit into that small catigory of people who have very few or no lesions.  However I do have a few lesions, ON, and progressing clinical symptoms.
I have not lost confidence in him even though he did not do my eyes....but it still irritates me because I did want to know! The more I know about my situation the better I can handle it.

It is funny to me that some people want to know nothing about their condition yet others have a need to know in order to deal with it.

My eye doctor is the kind of guy that would send me off.  In fact he did just that with my first bout of ON.  I went to see an Neuro-Ophthalmologist.

My ON has been rather "mild."  Well not to me!  I lost my vision and had to go to the ER not long ago.

Diemeyn- For sure go to a Neuro-Ophthalmologist if at all possible.

My neuro-ophthalmologist has, thus far, been the most helpful of all the docs I've seen on this odyssey.  He suggests, though, that I just see a regular eye doc for my glasses, since I have some paltry coverage through work, and he'd have to charge me an arm and a leg.  I'm seeing him on 12/4, and will try to arrange a regular eye doc exam in the meanwhile.

LA,
Thank you for that info. We are so short on money. It would be a waste to see a regular eye doctor. I'll see if I can get answers from the neuro when I see one. I don't seem to know of anyone else that is having the problem I am. Maybe it will be a big clue in the search for what is wrong with me. Thanks for the support.
