WARNING, WARNING, WARNING!!!

Please take it from my experience that it is VERY IMPORTANT to find out if any MEDICATIONS that you are prescribed make to more SENSITIVE TO THE SUN!!!

I mistakenly assumed that the Amitriptyline (Elavil) that I am taking (40mg/day) wouldn't make me THAT sensitive but I can honestly tell you  today that it will make you VERY SENSITIVE TO THE SUN AND YOU COULD END UP WITH 2ND OR 3RD DEGREE BURNS if you are not very careful!!!

My ankles are swollen to the size of my knees and I can hardly walk at the moment and my legs are starting to blister.  This is very serious and please take my word for it...you need to check all the side effects of ALL your meds before heading out in the sunshine.  In my case the breeze was very deceiving and I didn't realize how much I was burning until it was too late.  PLEASE heed this warning everyone because I would hate to see someone else having to deal with this pain on top of everything else we are dealing with!

With hugs and EXCLAMATION MARKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rena

I'm glad you're feeling better and the aloe sounds like a good idea if you can get some - it is very soothing.

Sunburns are nothing to "toy" with - they can be just as bad as if burnt by hot fire - hope things continue to imporve. No one needs more pain on top of everything else you have to deal with - especially from a sunburn.

Oh hon, I'm so sorry that you got burnt that bad. What a horrible thing to have happen. Please listen to the others and if there is any change what so ever then please, please go to the ER. This is something you do not want to fool around with. Look after yourself.

I think it is a good idea to have this in the health pages and although I am not yet on any meds other than percacet, I think it is good to know of things that need to be watched for. I'm just sorry that you had to experience this to find out.

Gentle distant hugs

Rena I am so sorry to hear what has happened.

Can I make a humble suggestion, as one who takes none of these meds?.  Would it be a good idea to have a section on the health pages outlining people's experiences, good and bad, or warnings, with meds?  Or is there some reason this can't be done?  Quix I'm sure you must have thought about this but here's my penny's worth idea anyway.

Rena take ALL the advice above in other posts and get well soon.  God bless.

I sincerely appreciate all the sympathy poring out from all my friends here!!

I did call the Healthlink in our area and spoke to a nurse last night about it and after I explained in detail what the situation was she told me to take a pair of pj bottoms and wet with cold water and lay them on top of my legs as a compress, cooling by waving in the air occasionally and putting back on my legs.  She said that taking the Tylenol was good for the pain and if I have any aloe gel to cool in the fridge and then spread on the legs.  Of course I don't have any aloe gel so I have just been doing the compresses which have helped a lot.  She said the swelling in my ankles is caused by the heat that is still in the burn and to drink lots of fluid (water, gator ade) and keep my legs elevated which I have been trying to do.  I still can't get any shoe of any sort on my left foot due to the swelling but the shins on both legs are both getting little blister like bumps on them and it is difficult to walk after sitting for a while and I can't stand in one position for very long (translates into...darn it was hard to unload the dishwasher today!).

They are getting better though and I am keeping a close eye on the blistering.  I did use some of that Banana Boat for sunburns (it's a spray with lidocaine in it) but it really didn't help at first...nothing did and the pain was excruciating!  I did carefully wipe that stuff off within the first few hours because I thought it might make it worse.

The nurse did warn me to watch very carefully for any signs of infection and I am hoping that these little blisters will dry up as the burn heals....I have to be able to walk for the eye appt. on Thursday though...can't miss that!  The nurse said that if there are any changes in my legs in the next 48 hours to go to ER...weeping, increase in pain, large blisters forming, ankles not going down, infection, unable to bear the pain (not able to sleep).  None of these things have been happening so far today so I am going to do the wait and see.

I sure appreciate the advice from everyone though and I will keep it in mind if you all keep in mind my warning about your meds ok?  I would hate to see this happen to someone else cause this is not very nice at all!  But it REALLY MADE ME MAD when I
COULDN'T FISH because of it!   ARRRRRGH!!!

lots of hugs,

Rena

I was thinking about the infection aspect too - this is not good - how terrible - swelling and blistering - don't put anything on those wounds just go to the hospital - as you don't want them to have to wash junk off and have it hurt you more. Learned that in first aid - keep all clean and go to an emergency clinic asap!

Also, I called my pharmacy and he said there was no photo sensitive warning for Zoloft but I did find one on Med Help - then the pharmacist told me to read the fine print on the receipt he gave me - great!

RENA!!!!!!!!Good Gads, Girl!   Actually you are talking about a pretty serious burn over a significant % of your body.  2nd degree burns blister.  3rd degree are full thickness, can't heal, and destroy the nerve endings, so that they are not painful.  If you have any 3rd degree, they will have to be skin grafted.  You are in danger of dehydrating with the fluid that 2nd degree burns lose.  Hit the electrolyte drinks.

The greatest danger (and it's almost a guarantee) is infection once the blister breaks down and the top of the blister becomes necrotic (dead).  SO, you must have these burns seen by a physician!!!  You must have these burns seen by a physician! (Is there an echo in here?)

These have to be treated as if you burned your legs in the campfire.  It's just as bad.  Except the sun'g UV rays penetrate more deeply and, as you all know, the burn "develops" over the first 24 hours.  You must have these burns seen by a physician.....and SOON!  (I didn't know MedHelp was in a canyon)

All your friends are right!  Get these seen by a doc before a deadly infection can set in!

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  and for good measure...!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh one more thing

dont put any lotions on it right now if it is blistering.  it is best to just keep the water on it.. that will stop the burning,,, the lotion will hold in the burn and make it blister more.  also if you can take motrin/ibuprofen.  it will help with swelling

but one more time if it is blistering I would see a doctor ok?

Just concerned

Hey Rena

That sounds horrible!!!!!  Having Blisters is NOT GOOD,,  Are you having chills?  if this continues to blister and swell I really think you need to see a Doctor.  Just my opinion Rena.  How long were you in the sun?  You need to get a big pot of coldish water and keep poring the water over the burned parts.. over and over.. you can also get a towel soak it in the water and lay it over the burns keep it moist with the water, It will help stop the burning ok?

I just have a gut feeling that you need to see a doctor.. for sure do what I said about the water ok?  PLEASE?

Oh, I am so sorry are in such misery!

I tried amytriptyline once and was so sun-sensitive that I got a rash on the side of my face while driving in my car with the windows up.  I was on a very low dose and had just started taking it.

Is aloe helping?  I've taken a tepid bath with lots of aloe vera gel in it when I've been burnt, and it helped a great deal.

I agree with you, people, be very careful!

I'll be sending you gentle hugs and prayers for a quick reduction of pain and swelling.

Thank you for posting this Rena - as I take Zoloft and just looked it up - guess what - same thing goes for it and when out on the bike - you guessed it - sun all around. I will for sure wear lots of sun screen and protective clothing - long pants and long sleeved shirts - gads.....that warning should be in big labels and the pharmacist should tell you about it too!
