The MS hug can include paresthesias around the torso area, but typically it's confined to banding type paresthesias, which means that you're getting a feeling of pressure. Shocks or sensitivity go into the neuralgia category... but essentially what's going on is some damage to the spine, which causes symptoms a little below the level of the damage.
Actually Kelly, it sounds a lot like the MS hug. Can't dx from here but any sort of banding sensation like that is indicitive of the the hug.
I found that applying pressure in the area that hurt, even wrapping a ace bandage around it helped. Counter intuitive I know but it worked for me. In reality I think it's the result of small contractions in your rib cage area.
